The present technology is generally directed to systems and methods for optimizing the burn profiles for coke ovens, such as horizontal heat recovery ovens. In various embodiments the burn profile is at least partially optimized by controlling air distribution in the coke oven. In some embodiments, the air distribution is controlled according to temperature readings in the coke oven. In particular embodiments, the system monitors the crown temperature of the coke oven. After the crown reaches a particular temperature range the flow of volatile matter is transferred to the sole flue to increase sole flue temperatures throughout the coking cycle. Embodiments of the present technology include an air distribution system having a plurality of crown air inlets positioned above the oven floor.

The system includes plurality of powder-locking and metering vessels, the vessels each having a conveying line for the powdery product and a control mechanism for the mass flow of the powdery product. The conveying lines are brought together to form a common conveying line and are supplied to a remover of the powdery product. The powder-locking and metering vessels are alternatively fed with the powdery product and tensioned with the fluidizing gas under operating pressure. The control mechanisms of the powder-locking and metering vessels are activated in such a manner that the mass flow sum of powdery product in the conveying lines is identical to the desired value for the mass flow of powdery product to the remover of the powdery product.

The liquid feed nozzle assemblies for a circulating fluid bed reactor comprise (i) a throttle body premixer to combine liquid feed with atomization steam to form a liquid feed/steam mixture comprising gas bubbles in liquid; (ii) a conduit connected to the premixer and to a discharge nozzle to convey a flow of the liquid/steam mixture created by the premixer to the nozzle body; (iii) a discharge nozzle connected to the flow conduit to shear the liquid feed/steam mixture to create liquid feed droplets of reduced size and (iv) a disperser at the outlet of the discharge nozzle to provide a spray jet of liquid feed having an increased surface area relative to a cylindrical jet. The nozzle assembles are particularly useful in fluid coking units using heavy oil feeds such a tar sands bitumen.

Channel for feeding of oxygen-containing agent (15) is connected to metering hopper of wet small particles of solid fuel wastes (16), which are used for formation of fluidized flow. Additional volume of oxygen-containing agent is injected into reactor as a part of main flow that is necessary for further combustion of small particles of solid fuel waste that passed through pyrolysis area (8) and carbonization area (7) and conversion of their moisture into superheating steam. A retort apparatus includes a primary rotating pipe within a second rotating pipe within a fixed pipe (27). The interior area of the primary rotating pipe is bounded by a heated pipe. A first annulus is formed between the primary and second rotating pipes. A second annulus is formed between the second rotating pipe and the heated pipe. A third annulus is formed between the primary rotating pipe and the fixed pipe. A heater is positioned within the interior area of said primary rotating pipe. In one embodiment, an inlet gate is provided for introducing a liquid and solid mixture into the first annulus proximate the second end thereof. A first conveyor is provided to move the mixture toward the hot end of the primary rotating pipe. A second conveyance is provided for transferring the mixture from the first annulus to the second annulus within the interior of the primary rotating pipe, and a third conveyance is provided to move the mixture within the second annulus in a direction toward the cooler end of the primary rotating pipe. A method according to the invention includes introducing a liquid and solid mixture into an annulus formed between the two rotating pipes and causing the mixture to move within the annulus toward one end of the pipe. The method also includes transferring the mixture from the annulus to the interior area of the inner rotating pipe, and causing the mixture within the interior area to move in a direction toward the other end of the rotating pipe.

The method includes depositing coal particles onto a charging plate external to a coking oven. The charging plate has side walls, and at least one movable end wall to provide an elongate bed of dry, uncompacted coal having an upper surface on the charging plate. The uncompacted coal is compacted by passing a vibratory cylindrical compactor along a length of the uncompacted coal for a number of passes sufficient to decrease a thickness of the bed of coal to less than about 80 percent of an original thickness of the uncompacted coal. The vibratory cylindrical compactor has a length to diameter ratio ranging from about 1.4:1 to about 2:1.

To make it easier to carbonize the processing target material to a desired carbonized condition and also to make installment within a limited installment space possible. A carbonizing apparatus includes a carbonizing furnace having a feeding portion for a processing target material, a takeout portion for a carbonized material, a blowout portion for combustion air and an exhausting portion for combustion exhaust gas and a stirring device capable of stirring the processing target material inside the carbonizing furnace. The blowout amount of the combustion air is adjustable. The apparatus is operable to carbonize the processing target material fed from the feeding portion, with stirring, spontaneously combusting and moving the material while moving this material toward the takeout portion and subsequently to take out the resultant carbonized material from the takeout portion. The carbonizing furnace is constructed as a vertical type including the feeding portion and the exhausting portion at an upper section of the furnace and including the takeout portion and the blowout portion at a lower section of the furnace, so that the processing target material can be moved by the deadweight thereof toward the takeout portion, a takeout speed of the carbonized material from the takeout portion being adjustable. The stirring device includes a stirring member capable of swiveling about a vertical axis X.
