摘要: Method for long-term dry storage of spent nuclear fuel includes injecting the inert gas into a cavity formed in a cask between inner and outer lids under pressure greater than the pressure of the inert gas in the inner cavity of the cask in which the spent nuclear fuel is located. The cask contains a body with a spent nuclear fuel container placed in it, tight inner and outer lids forming a cavity into which the inert gas is pumped under pressure greater than the pressure in the inner cavity of the cask. The outer lid comprises a labyrinth hole closed with a flange and sealed with a gasket. The flange comprises an angle valve, to which at least two pressure sensors are connected. The angle valve and sensors are covered with a protective cover during long-term storage. The gasket is installed in an annular groove of the lower flange.

摘要: A method of forming a sealed canister and a method of storing radioactive materials is provided. The method of forming includes placing a top plate on a top opening of a side wall, a bottom of the side wall being sealed to a base plate. The top plate includes a top surface with a top edge having a bevel and with a channel set in from the top edge. Finally, a weld is formed between the beveled top edge and the top opening of the side wall to seal the top plate to the side wall.

摘要: A containment cask is disclosed for safely transporting and storing radioactive hazardous waste in a dry air environment. The cask comprises a single drum containing the radioactive hazardous waste, a sealed and shielded containment vessel containing the drum, and an outer container. The outer container can be in the form of an outer shield vessel (OSV) made from iron to provide further shielding. This outer container is appropriate for a drum having higher activity waste. The outer container can also be in the form of an overpack assembly that adds protection for atmospheric hazards, but adds little in terms of shielding. This outer container is appropriate for a drum having lower activity waste.

摘要: The invention is of systems and methods for long-term disposal/storage of depleted uranium products and materials (such as munitions), in solid, liquid, and other physical forms in in lateral wellbores and/or in human-made caverns derived from a wellbore, located within deep geologic rock formations. Converted and/or modified depleted uranium products, materials, and/or wastes may be processed, made into slurries, chemically treated for long duration disposal, and/or implemented in waste disposal capsules and/or maintained as cementitious material or solids which are then transported and finally disposed of into lateral wellbores or human-made caverns within the deep geologic rock formations. Void space around depleted uranium products, materials, and/or wastes may be filled with a protective medium.

摘要: The present invention provides systems, methods and devices for storing and/or disposing of hazardous waste material such as calcined material. In certain embodiments, the system comprises a filling nozzle having a valve body having a distal end and an outer surface, the outer surface proximate the distal end being configured to sealingly and removeably couple to an inner surface of a filling port of the container. In certain embodiments, the method comprises (a) coupling an outer surface of a filling nozzle with an inner surface of a filling port of a container to form a first seal (b) adding hazardous waste material into the container (c) decoupling the filling port from the filling nozzle and (d) inserting a fill plug into the filling port, the fill plug forming a second seal with the inner surface of the filling port, the second seal being distally spaced from at least a portion of the first seal with respect to the container.

摘要: A system and method for drying cavities containing spent nuclear fuel is devised. The invention utilizes a non-intrusive procedure that is based on monitoring the dew point temperature of a non-reactive gas that is circulated through the cavity. In one aspect, the invention is a system for drying a cavity loaded with spent nuclear fuel comprising: a canister forming the cavity, the cavity having an inlet and an outlet; a source of non-reactive gas; means for flowing the non-reactive gas from the source of non-reactive gas through the cavity; and means for repetitively measuring the dew point temperature of the non-reactive gas exiting the cavity.

摘要: A container for nuclear and/or hazardous material including a container body and lid made of metal in which the body and lid are welded together to form a sealed container. Scannable elements are spatially distributed on the lid and adapted to be scanned with an ultrasonic scanner. One or more of the scannable elements is an inclined surface element, each inclined surface element being inclined relative to the axis of the lid. Upon scanning the scannable elements, the ultrasonic scanner produces a first scan signal. The first scan signal is based upon which of the scannable elements are inclined surface elements, and includes an identification code. A second scan signal is obtained by scanning a signature surface element in a weld zone between the body and lid. The lid may be identified/authenticated using a third signal derived from the intersection of the first and second scan signals.

摘要: Systems and methods for long term disposal of high level nuclear waste in deep geologic formations are described. Such systems and method may include largely intact spent nuclear fuel rods in a disassembled form that may be placed into waste-capsules (e.g., carrier tubes); which may then be placed into various well boreholes. Example embodiments may provide waste-capsules capable of containing and disposing of waste generated from spent nuclear fuel, including means for harvesting the nuclear waste from cooling pools and operationally processing the waste fuel assemblies for inclusion in the waste-capsules with various engineered barriers; along with storage in horizontal well boreholes drilled into closed deep geologic formations.

摘要: There is disclosed a canister for interim storage and subsequent consolidation of waste materials via hot pressing. In an embodiment, the canister comprises at least one ion exchange material, and is configured to: house the ion exchange material after it is exchanged with a contaminating ion without releasing the contaminating ion; and consolidate via hot-isostatic pressing. There is also disclosed a contacting a fluid waste with an ion exchange material, wherein the ion exchange material is located in a canister; evacuating the canister; and hot isostatically pressing (HIP) the canister until it collapses under HIP conditions.
