A stator and armature assembly 12 is provided for a permanent magnet DC motor. The assembly includes an armature 13 having a lamination core 14 and windings 15, and a stator structure 16 associated with the armature. The armature is constructed and arranged to rotate with respect to the stator structure. The stator structure includes at least one permanent magnet 22 providing a certain flux, and at least one wound core structure 17 having a core 18 and a coil 19 wound about the core so as to define an alternate pole with respect to the permanent magnet. When current to the coil is controlled, flux of the stator structure 16 can be increased or decreased relative to the certain flux. In this way a motor can operate at different speeds.

A brush holder 10 includes a plate portion 13 that is opposed to the end surface portion 8a. A case 15, which receives the control circuit board 14, is formed separately from the plate portion 13. A receiving through hole, through which the circuit board receiver 15 is receivable, is formed in the plate portion 13. The case 15 is constructed to be positionable next to the yoke 5 in a state where the case 15 is received through the receiving through hole. The yoke 5, the gear housing 8, the brush holder 10, the control circuit board 14 and the case 15 are assembleable in a direction parallel to an axial direction of the motor unit 2. A multiple stator for an electrical machine includes an excitation winding (5) assembled of a plurality of compound coil members (6) each including a main winding element (8, 9) and a shunt winding element (7). All shunt winding elements (13-16) are made in a single winding operation from a continuous insulated wire (46) wound on winding formers (18-21) created by folding perforated parts of a band-shaped support (17) whereby openings matching the cross-section of respective poles result in the band material. The band-shaped support is provided with notches for anchoring the ends of respective winding elements. The support is arched to match the inner wall of a stator and inserted into the housing whereby chain-link shaped main winding elements (8, 9) surround the individual shunt winding elements. The poles are then inserted into the openings of the winding support and secured to the housing.
