Abstract:
A filter for removing contaminants from air. The filter includes (a) a substrate that does not have any volatile ammonia on the surface thereof; (b) copper that has been impregnated onto the substrate; and (c) molybdenum and/or tungsten that has been impregnated onto the substrate. The filter can be made using an aqueous solution(s) that contains one or more of a first copper salt and a second salt that include a polynuclear anion that contains molybdenum, tungsten, or both. Because the metals can be impregnated onto the substrate surface without using an ammonium-based solution, the need to manage ammonia off-gassing is avoided. Further, no volatile ammonia would be present on the resulting substrate surface.
Abstract:
A composite formed of a polymer matrix phase having a reinforcement phase including polymeric microfibers. The microfibers are preferably formed of a highly oriented polymer, having a high modulus value and a large surface area. The large surface area can serve to tightly bind the microfibers to the polymer matrix phase. The microfibers can be provided as a fully- or partially-microfibrillated film, as a non-woven web of entangled microfibers, or as a pulp having free fibers. The microfibers can be embedded in, or impregnated with, a polymer or polymer precursor. Some composite articles are formed from thermoset resins cured about a highly oriented poylpropylene microfiber reinforcement phase, providing a strong, tough, moisture resistant article. One composite includes a matrix and reinforcement formed of the same material type and having substantially equal refractive indices, allowing the composite to be optically clear.
Abstract:
Heterogeneous catalyst systems, methods of making these systems, and methods of using these systems, wherein catalytically active gold is deposited onto composite support media. The composite support media is formed by providing nanoporous material on at least a portion of the surfaces of carbonaceous host material. In representative embodiments, relatively fine, nanoporous guest particles are coated or otherwise provided on surfaces of relatively coarser activated carbon particles. Catalytically active gold may be deposited onto one or both of the guest or host materials either before or after the guest and host materials are combined to form the composite host material. PVD is the preferred catalyst system of depositing gold.
Abstract:
Use of physical vapor deposition methodologies to deposit nanoscale gold on activating support media makes the use of catalytically active gold dramatically easier and opens the door to significant improvements associated with developing, making, and using gold-based, catalytic systems. The present invention, therefore, relates to novel features, ingredients, and formulations of gold-based, heterogeneous catalyst systems generally comprising nanoscale gold deposited onto a nanoporous support.
