Abstract: For better automotive fuel economy and environmental quality in an engine, a mixture heating chamber (1) is attached to an engine exhaust manifold. A U-shaped air tube (7) is connected to the mixture heating chamber (1) for supplying heated air to the chamber (1). A vapor supply fuel line supplies the chamber (1) with liquid fuel, the liquid fuel being sprayed from the vapor supply fuel line (19) into a portion of the U-shaped air tube (7) located inside the chamber (1) resulting in vaporization of the liquid fuel. The mixture heating chamber (1) is partially filled with copper pads (3) for fire retarding purposes and its interior is lined with a felt-liner (5) which retains the liquid fuel present and also acts as a wick. A fuel selector switch (21) allows fuel to be channelled through a vapor supply fuel line (19) and into the mixture heating chamber (1) or into a main fuel line (39) which connects directly to the carburetor (41).

Abstract: An apparatus and method for improving the transient response of a spark-ignited fuel-injected internal combustion engine is disclosed. This is accomplished by employing one or more novel capillary fuel injectors. These devices are port fuel injectors modified by inserting one or more relatively small diameter heated tubular capillaries between the fuel line and a conventional injector. Sufficient heating can be produced so that flash vaporization occurs as the fuel exits the injector. The heaters are turned on using control algorithms that can be based on exhaust gas oxygen concentration, load on the engine, and accelerator pedal position.

Abstract: A fuel system especially designed for use with an internal combustion engine (10) or the like, which fuel system is operable therewith to provide fuel fumes or vapor to the engine (10) from a source of liquid ignitable vaporizable fuel. The fuel system includes an air supply conduit (36, 36', 36'', 36''') to which fuel (50, 57, 57'', 57''', 57a) can be added by a separate fuel supply line (50, 50', 100) at its upstream end and whose downstream end is connected to a container of liquid fuel (16, 16', 16''). The air, with the additional fuel, can then be treated by a swirling device (44, 44', 44''') prior to its admission to the container of fuel or supplied directly to the container where it interacts with the fuel, directly, or indirectly through a wick device (77'', 77''', 77a), produces a vapor, and exits through a collector (24, 24'), connected to a fuel supply conduit to the engine.
