    Abstract: A flow meter having a laser Doppler anemometer (LDA) which measures the instantaneous centerline velocity of fluid flow in a pipe and processes the instantaneous velocity so obtained to compute the volumetric flow rate, mass rate, and other flow characteristics as instantaneous quantities and/or integrated over a time interval using an electronic processing method which provides an exact solution to the Navier-Stokes equations for any periodically oscillating flow. The flow meter is particularly adapted for measuring the flow characteristics of high pressure automotive fuel injection systems. Three embodiments of the flow meter are described, including a stationary stand (110) for off-line bench testing flow rate in a fuel injection system (116, 118, 120), a portable flow meter (170) for inline testing in a vehicle's fuel line, and an on-board flow meter sensor (200) connected to an engine control module (214).

    Abstract: In an electromagnetic type fuel injection valve for internal combustion engines, a valve-driving electromagnetic coil bobbin (15) is made of a synthetic resin containing a filler having good thermal conductivity. The electromagnetic coil includes two kinds of coils (12, 13), different in characteristics from each other, that are axially-separately wound on one bobbin (15). One coil (12) is wound on the bobbin (15) such that it is closer to a movable element (19) than the other coil (13), and the outer diameter of the bobbin in the region where the other coil (13) is wound is smaller than the outer diameter of the bobbin in the region where one coil (12) is wound. Further, the inner diameter of the bobbin in the region where one coil (12) is wound has a level difference to form an annular space in which a seal ring (18) is disposed. The two kinds of coils (12, 13) are connected to a power supply and a switching element through a three-terminal connector.

    Abstract: In prior art fuel-injection valves, a perforated disc with several directional apertures, through which fuel is metered and atomized, is located downstream of the valve seat. These metering apertures produce filament jets with a relatively low degree of atomization, and the fuel/air mixture produced is thus not as homogeneous as it could be. In the invention, the individual metering apertures (43) in the perforated disc (42) are partly covered, for instance by the end (40) of the nozzle body (5). The flow edges (47) thus formed disrupt the fuel flow so that the fuel is particularly finely atomized and will form a homogeneous mixture. The fuel-injection valve proposed is particularly suitable for use in fuel-injection systems in mixture compression spark-ignition engines.

    Abstract: In prior art fuel-injection valves, a stop plate which limits the stroke of the valve needle is located between a stop shoulder on the valve needle and an inner shoulder of the valve housing, the stop plate having a mounting slot between its port and its periphery. When the valve housing is flanged, the high axial forces produced give a high pressure acting on the edge of the mounting slot and causing non-uniform distortion of the valve housing. In the new fuel-injection valve proposed, there are at least two recesses (75) in an upper stop surface (73) of the stop plate (16) abutting the inner shoulder of the valve housing. These recesses are symmetrically disposed with respect to the centre line (76) of the mounting slot (70) and in the half of the stop plate (16) not containing the mounting slot (70). The recesses (75) ensure that the stop plate (16) deforms uniformly and to a limited extent into the valve housing. This design of fuel-injection valve is particularly suitable for fuel-injection systems in externally ignited internal-combustion engines.

    Abstract: Known fuel-air mix injection devices can only be adapted to individually required air mass flows within limits and at high cost. Other devices with standard injection valves occupy a large space and have a complex structure. A new device has the advantage of being a prefabricated part capable of being used with various fuel injection valves without further adjustments.
