The present invention relates to a melamine/formaldehyde (MF) resin composition containing a condensed tannin, and to the use thereof. The resin composition of the present invention, in which 20 wt % or less of condensed tannin is blended into a melamine/formaldehyde resin, is an environmentally-friendly resin composition that reduces the emission of formaldehyde by the condensed tannin, without performing additional processes such as a surface treatment process or the like which might otherwise be performed to reduce formaldehyde. The thus-obtained resin composition of the present invention has superior reactivity between the condensed tannin and formaldehyde, and thus the adhesive force of the resin composition is improved. As the condensed tannin is added in the process for preparing the resin, the effects of the condensed tannin on the reduction of formaldehyde emissions are maintained even after a predetermined period of time elapses. Thus, the melamine/formaldehyde resin composition containing a condensed tannin according to the present invention can be effectively used as a surface material for environmentally-friendly wood, as an adhesive for wood, and as a finishing material for interior architecture.

Novel low viscosity oligomeric polyols and the use thereof in coating compositions are disclosed. The novel low viscosity oligomeric polyols may be prepared by reacting at least one melamine aldehyde resin and at least one of α,β-diol, α,γ-diol, or mixture thereof. The reaction may occur in the presence of an acid catalyst. Coating compositions with a low VOC able to cure under ambient and forced dry conditions while providing good application and performance characteristics, such as an improved scratch resistance, are also disclosed.

Method for production of a coating on a solid substrate comprising the steps of applying a liquid coating composition comprising a polyfunctional resin, a fatty acid or derivative thereof acting as a reactive diluent and optionally a curing agent and/or one or more additives, wherein the resin comprises functional groups capable of reacting with carboxyl or acyl groups of the fatty acid or derivative thereof, onto the substrate, and curing the coating by heat activation. The invention further relates to the liquid coating composition as well as a substrate comprising a coating obtained by heat activation of such a coating composition.
