Abstract:
A method is provided for treating a paper product, the method comprising; providing a mixture comprising lignin in an aqueous solution at a concentration and pH such that substantially all the lignin is solubilised; treating the paper product with a cationic polymer followed by treating the paper product with the lignin mixture.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a method and an apparatus in the surface sizing of a paper or board web. In the method according to the invention, surface size, such as a starch solution, is applied by means of an applicator device (1) to at least one side of the web (W) to be surface sized, and in which surface sizing is performed per one side of said web (W) in one or more stages. In connection with the application of surface size, a pressure effect is applied to the web (W) by subjecting the web (W) to an underpressure and/or to an overpressure such that, by means of said pressure effect, surface size is forced to penetrate into the web (W) into the pores of the web. Most advantageously, in the pores of the web (W) an underpressure is created that sucks surface size applied to the surface of the web from the surface of the web (W) into the pores in the inner layers. In that connection, surface size is applied to a first side (W1) of the web and a vacuum effect is applied to the opposite side, i.e. a second side (W2), of the web (W) to cause air to flow through the web (W) such that surface size moves from the first side (WI) of the web in the direction of the second side (W2) of the web into the web (W). In a corresponding manner, both sides of the web (W) can be treated in successive stages.
Abstract:
The object of the present invention is an arrangement for feeding treatment agent to a treatment apparatus used for treating a fibre web, such as a paper and/or board web, from which apparatus the treatment agent is spread to one or more fibre web surfaces, and which comprises at least one application apparatus fro spreading the treatment agent to the fibre web, and which arrangement comprises means for feeding the treatment agent to the treatment apparatus. The means for feeding the treatment agent to the treatment apparatus are, at least mainly, located between the frame and/or foundation bars of the treatment apparatus on the main line of the treatment apparatus. In addition, the object of the present invention is a method for feeding treatment agent.
Abstract:
The invention provides a process for the production of a coated and pressed cellulosic fibrous flat substrate of loose, optionally bonded fibers, by application of (M) an aqueous coating composition, containing a binder (B), a white pigment (W) and a dispersant (D), wherein at least a part of the white pigment (W) is (A) a particulate ammonium polyphosphate of crystalline form II of average particle size
Abstract:
In the method for adding pigment to paper, pigment raw material is fed in a soluble state into or towards the moving paper web, which is at least partly formed, and after the feeding, the raw material is brought into conditions through which the pigment is caused to precipitate. The pigment to be precipitated is at least one of the following: gypsum, aluminium hydroxide or calcium carbonate.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a method of manufacturing a paper or board web, in which method the web is manufactured in an on-line manufacturing process, in which the web is passed from a paper or board machine (15) directly to a finishing device/finishing devices (60, 50, 10). In the method, the state of the finishing device/finishing devices (60, 50, 10) is monitored and, during a shutdown of a finishing device (60; 50; 10), said finishing device is bypassed, the web coming from the paper or board machine (15) is wound into machine reels and/or treated by means of some finishing device/finishing devices and wound into machine reels. The invention also relates to a paper or board machine, which paper or board machine forms an on-line manufacturing process together with a finishing device/finishing devices.
Abstract:
Paper comprised of suitable amounts of a hydroxy-phenoxyether polymer is effective to provide that paper with an increase in sizing or strength. Such paper may be prepared by intermixing dispersions or solutions of hydroxy-phenoxyether polymer with the pulp slurry or web during papermaking, or by application to formed paper. Paper may be coated or laminated by applying such dispersions or solutions.
Abstract:
A method of manufacturing a finished product from a lignocellulosic material such as a length of wood or chipboard, consists of impregnating the lignocellulosic material with an impregnating composition containing a thermosetting resin in a solvent, a styrene polymer in a solvent, optionally an anhydride in the solvent, optionally a mineral oil or a vegetable oil in a solvent, optionally a catalyst for the thermosetting resin, and optionally a hydrophobic agent. Thereafter, there is removed from the impregnated lignocellulosic material any excess of the impregnating composition and then there is removed the non-aqueous solvent or solvents. The product is then subjected to suitable conditions of temperature and pressure to polymerise the thermosetting resin to form the finished product.
Abstract:
The present invention comprises an apparatus for making a selectively-coated web. The apparatus comprises a coating means for applying a coating to a web in a plurality of coated regions, the coated regions being in spaced, parallel relationship to a plurality of uncoated regions. The present invention further comprises support means for supporting the web after coating, the support means comprising a plurality of support members, each of the support members being in registry with an uncoated region. In a preferred embodiment the coating of a beneficial emulsion is applied in selected regions by extrusion. A method of forming a coated web without producing buildup of coating material on idler rollers is also disclosed. The method comprises the steps of: (a) coating a web in a plurality of coated regions, the coated regions being in parallel spaced apart relationship to uncoated regions; (b) providing support members, each of the support members being aligned in registry with an uncoated region; and (c) guiding the coated web in contact with the support members such that each support member is in registry with an uncoated region of said web.
Abstract:
A method of treatment and use of an aqueous coating composition which includes the steps of (a) concentrating the composition to increase the solids content thereof and (b) employing the concentrated composition to coat a sheet material, e.g. paper, wherein the concentration step (a) is carried out by use of thermal evaporation under reduced pressure. The composition concentrated may be a previously employed coating composition which has been recovered or it may be a fresh coating composition.
