Abstract:
A Superconducting Quantum Interference Device (SQUID) is disclosed comprising a pair of resistively shunted Josephson junctions connected in parallel within a superconducting loop and biased by an external direct current (dc) source. The SQUID comprises a semiconductor substrate and at least one superconducting layer. The metal layer(s) are separated by or covered with a semiconductor material layer having the properties of a conductor at room temperature and the properties of an insulator at operating temperatures (generally less than 100 Kelvins). The properties of the semiconductor material layer greatly reduces the risk of electrostatic discharge that can damage the device during normal handling of the device at room temperature, while still providing the insulating properties desired to allow normal functioning of the device at its operating temperature. A method of manufacturing the SQUID device is also disclosed.
Abstract:
A device and method for retaining an excess portion of a lead implanted within or on a surface of a brain of a patient is disclosed. The device comprises a burr hole ring configured to be secured to a skull of the patient and a lead retainer extending from the burr hole ring. The lead retainer is configured to store at least a section of the excess portion of the lead.
Abstract:
A display device (8) such as a flat screen television may be stowed away out of sight within a cabin by partly recessing into a moulded coaming (3) forming part of the boat's superstructure (1) in addition to being partially received in a special housing (7). In this way, the fact that a display device (8) is hidden out of view is made less obvious because the housing (7) does not conform to the shape of the display device (8).
Abstract:
The invention provides truncated GSK3 polypeptides capable of crystallization, including GSK3α and GSK3β polypeptides, and use of these polypeptides to identify and optimize GSK3 inhibitors. Also provided are GSK3 polypeptides having at least one substituted amino acid that differs from wild-type GSK3, wherein the substituted amino acid is incapable of being phosphorylated. The invention finds use in providing methods of identifying and optimizing compounds useful for treating diseases mediated by GSK3 activity, inlcuding Alzheimer's disease, type 2 diabetes, and inflammation.
Abstract:
The invention is a method and apparatus for performing beating heart surgery, in which a single articulating arm supports multiple suction pods. Once the suction pods are applied to the heart surface, tightening a cable fixes the arm in place. Then, the suction pods may be spread apart from each other to tighten the surface of the cardiac tissue lying between the suction pods. In one embodiment, fixation of the arm as well as the spreading apart of the suction pods may occur concurrently or almost concurrently through the tensioning of a single cable. Additional embodiments of the method, system and its components are shown.
Abstract:
An aircraft instrumentation system providing a head-up display which displays modified indications of flight path and other parameters, very substantial modifications being made to achieve a display which is useful in all manoeuvres even in an agile fast-jet aircraft. The modifications reduce the transient movements of the display indicia which are due to the increased incidence needed to instigate flight path changes. One modification provides an aircraft symbol constrained to stay on a vertical centreline of the display unit, with a displacement depending on bank angle to preserve horizon correlation as far as possible. A comparatively small symbol (vv diamond) with unlimited motion indicates the flight path direction and a pitch ladder indicates modified climb-dive angle when read against the aircraft symbol. The positions of the aircraft symbol, vv diamond, and pitch ladder are all modified by Q functions derived from pitch attitude or body pitch rate to offset the effect of transient variations of pitch in flight path manoeuvres. The Q functions are calculated by algorithms involving a variable time constant tau which is approximately matched to the time constant of the heave mode response of the aircraft, which is a function of mass, airspeed, wing area, and lift-curve slope coefficient. A linear approximation is used, with an experimental optimisation, to derive an appropriate expression for tau . Peripheral scales showing attitude and optional other parameters are positioned in a fixed relationship to the variable position of the aircraft symbol.
Abstract:
This is a structure for assembly of two videos or cameras, etc., that work as do human eyes. Our human eyes, when wishing to see something that is closure in distance, the eyes swerve more to the center, left eye turning right, and right eye turning left. In this analogy, we shall manifest two human eyes being six and a half centimeters apart from left pupil to right pupil. In order to target at a point from two angles, the eyes must give less attention to the wider area. All around the area, the two human eyes see a misty, vague shadow, and also double, since the two eyes look from different locations. This Video/Camera works in the same way as do our human eyes, with the two human lenses placed six and a half centimeters apart from the center of the left lens to the center of the right lens.
Abstract:
De-ethylflavopereirine, a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, a solvate or a hydrate thereof, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt of a solvate or a hydrate thereof may be used as cancer therapy (i.e., prevention and/or treatment) in a subject in need thereof, including a pathological condition such as inflammation, especially chronic, or cancer (e.g., a carcinoma, a sarcoma, a melanoma, a leukemia, a lymphoma), especially a solid tumor and/or a metastasis thereof. In particular, systemic administration of such improved anti-cancer agents in effective amounts may selectively destroy cancer cells (including cancer stem cells) in a solid tumor and/or at a site of metastasis. They are well-tolerated by the subject, even at large systemic doses and their resulting high concentrations in the circulation, and provide safe and effective anti-cancer agents.
Abstract:
A system and method for friction stir welding of small diameter tubing, wherein the small diameter tubing is held in a correct position with a grasp sufficient to perform FSW when the tubing is comprised of high melting temperature materials, wherein the small diameter tubing can be rotated by the positioning and holding system while a FSW tool is held stationary, or vice versa, wherein internal mandrels are also described which can fit inside the smaller dimensions of the small diameter tubing and expand to provide a counter force to prevent deformation of the tubing when forces are applied by the FSW tool, wherein new FSW tool geometries are also described which enable the FSW tool to direct more heat on a tool/workpiece interface to counteract a lack of contact between the FSW shoulder and the workpiece because of tube curvature, and wherein the FSW tool is positioned on a small diameter tube by trailing the joint to provide desirable heating at the joint /workpiece interface and surface finishing.
Abstract:
A connector assembly (100) includes a housing having a cavity (108) defined by at least one wall (170). The cavity extends between a mating end and a loading end. The housing has a terminal latch (190) associated with the cavity, and the at least one wall has a projection (180) extending into the cavity. A terminal (104) is loaded into the cavity (108) through the loading end and is held within the cavity by the terminal latch (190). The terminal (104) includes body having an opening (158), wherein the projection (180) extends at least partially into the opening (158) to secure the terminal (104) within the cavity (108).
