A method for preparing an aqueous polyacrylamide solution is disclosed. The method comprises: hydrating acrylonitrile in water in presence of a biocatalyst capable of converting acrylonitrile to acrylamide so as to obtain an acrylamide solution, directly polymerizing the acrylamide solution so as to obtain a polyacrylamide gel, and directly dissolving the polyacrylamide gel by addition of water so as to obtain an aqueous polyacrylamide solution, wherein the polyacrylamide gel is dissolved by means of an mixer comprising a rotatable impeller and a cylindrical array of radially oriented blade members circumferentially surrounding the impeller with radial discharge orifices between adjacent blades.

The present disclosure relates to methods for producing an amide compound from a nitrile compound using a dried biocatalyst which has been pre-treated with a buffer, wherein the dried and pre-treated biocatalyst has improved properties as compared to a dried biocatalyst which has not been pre-treated with a buffer. In particular, the present disclosure provides means and methods to enhance the NHase activity of a dried biocatalyst for use in the production of amide compounds from nitrile compounds in aqueous solutions thereby improving the bioconversion process.

The bioreactor also includes a growth reactor continuous with the main reactor and having a configuration selected from the group consisting of stirred and unstirred tank reactor, trickle bed reactor (TBR), cocurrent contactor (CCC), moving bed bioreactor (MBBR), and a bubble column reactor. A method is also provided where acetogenic bacteria are contacted with syngas in a growth fermentor section of a reactor vessel that is continuous with a main fermentor section of a reactor vessel.

Embodiments of the invention relate to the enzymatic conversion of bioderived feedstocks to commercially valuable chemicals. The enzymatic conversions of the embodiments of the invention offer the potential for lower cost routes to these value-added chemicals. Some of the chemicals that are useful include nylon intermediates such as caprolactam, adipic acid, 1,6-hexamethylene diamine; butanediols such as 1,4-butanediol, 1,3-butanediol, and 2,3-butanediol; butanols such as 1-butanol, and 2-butanol; succinic acid, butadiene, isoprene, and 3-hydroxypropanoic acid.
