Systems are disclosed for making and using micro-porous particulates at least partially composed of metal sulfides, particularly alkaline earth metal and transition metal sulfides, as sorbents for removal of mercury from flue gas. Calcium sulfide micro-porous powders derived from the high temperature reduction of calcium sulfate and calcium sulfite are disclosed to be reactive substrates for a group of sorbents for adsorption of mercury from coal combustion flue gases produced by the utilities industry, as well as from natural gas and gaseous and liquid hydrocarbons. The sorbents are useful for cost-effectively adsorbing elemental mercury and oxidized mercury species such as mercuric chloride from flue gases, including those containing acid gases (e.g., SO.sub.2, NO and NO.sub.2, and HCI), over a wide range of temperatures.

The adsorbents comprise a porous media in which at least one oxygen-containing compound of iron, copper, aluminum, zirconium, titanium and combinations thereof is incorporated. The oxygen-containing compound may be incorporated into the porous media by impregnation or dispersion of a suitable precursor of such a compound. The precursor may be further treated to yield the oxygen-containing compound. Such adsorbents are particularly useful for removing lead and/or other metal cations from the environment and may be used in treating drinking water sources.

A process of recovering metal ions from an aqueous metal ion solution including the steps of impregnating a metal extractant within the porous body described above, contacting the aqueous ion solution with the impregnated porous body in order to remove the metal ions therefrom, and separating the ions from the impregnated porous body.
