Abstract:
The present invention provides a packaging apparatus comprising a wrapping material applicator for helically wrapping together a collation of articles, a first conveyor for transporting unwrapped collations of articles to the applicator; a second conveyor for transporting wrapped collations of articles away from the applicator; and a base band applicator upstream of the wrapping material applicator for providing a base band of wrapping material underneath the unwrapped collations of articles such that the base band extends between wrapped collations of articles downstream of the applicator and unwrapped collations of articles upstream of the applicator, the base band being wrapped together with the collations of articles. The first and second conveyors are spaced apart and the applicator is provided between them. The packaging apparatus further comprises a tensioning mechanism configured, in use, to place at least a portion of the base band under tension before an unwrapped collation of articles is placed onto that portion of the base band.

Abstract:
A system for cutting and wrapping blocks of synthetic material enables a material block to be pre-cut into a form substantially ready to be used as packaging filler while maintaining the original compact block shape for shipping and storage. In one aspect, the system takes synthetic material blocks, such as thermoplastic blocks, and sequentially drives the blocks through a cutting mechanism that cuts the blocks in two directions to form thermoplastic strips. The thermoplastic strips are held together in the original geometric form of the block through the cutting process, and thereafter a rotating wrapper applies a wrapping material to the pre-cut thermoplastic block secure the pre-cut block in the original geometric form. A block or log magazine sequentially positions multiple synthetic material blocks prior to being driven through the cutting mechanism.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for stretch wrapping a load in an efficient manner so as to tightly and securely wrap the load at a desired tension without rupturing the packaging material. The method and apparatus compensate for variation in demand rate as the load is wrapped so as to apply the wrapping material (116) to a load (124) at a desired force, maintain the desired containment tension on the wrapping material on the load after wrapping, and prevent the wrapping material from rupturing during wrapping. The apparatus combines two systems, power assisted roller stretch ("PRS") and roller stretch ("RS") to vary the supply rate of the packaging material as the demand rate varies. The apparatus automatically switches between the two types of prestretch to achieve "high" and "low" wrapping force dependent upon the demand rate. Changes in the demand rate are sensed by monitoring changes in the payoff angle of the packaging material extending between the dispenser (102) and the load.
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for wrapping a top and bottom of a load (212) with packaging material (214) is provided. The apparatus includes at least one non-driven packaging material guide (220a, 220b) is provided for use in combination with a powered conveying surface (218). The non-powered packaging material guide includes at least one row of non-driven wheels (222) attached to a rail (224). The force applied by the packaging material (214) as it is wrapped around the guide is supported by both the rail (224) and the at least one row of non-driven wheels (222). The rail also serves to bridge any gaps between the non-driven wheels, thereby preventing capture of packaging material between the non-driven wheels. Preferably, the packaging material guide includes two rows of non-driven wheels, one on each side of the rail. Further, it is preferable that the rail connect the two rows of wheels such that the two rows of wheels form an angle of 60 degrees between them. The packaging material guide is preferably positioned above the load but may also be positioned either below the load or to the sides of the load.
Abstract:
A flexible wrapping material for wrapping elongate articles by forming thereon a helical winding comprises a strip of flexible material (10) having on a first face (11) thereof adjacent to one longitudinal edge (13) of the strip a first band (12) of adhesive substance of a per se known kind which without the application of heat adheres strongly only to itself, and having a further band (14) of such adhesive material on the opposite face of the strip adjacent to the opposite edge (15), the two bands (12, 14) extending away from the respective edges (13, 15) of the strip, on opposite faces of the strip, towards, but preferably not up to the longitudinal centreline so that when formed into a helical wrapping around an elongate article the two bands come into face-to-face contact on adjacent turns of the winding. The adhesive substance is preferably carried by a strip of reinforcement material which is itself adhesively secured to the wrapping material adjacent to the edges (13, 15) thereof.
Abstract:
Packaging articles (11) in sets having articles (11) adjacent both in direction of feed of articles (11) and transversely thereof, comprises feeding the sets successively into and through a helical wrapping station (14) and involves separating articles (11) otherwise adjacent transversely of the direction of feed, at least during application of helical wrapping (17).
