In particular, the invention monitors the pressure of blood entering and leaving a patient's body using several sensors (37, 39) and adapts the pressure of a dialysate solution feed to the dialysis machine to compensate for compliances in the fluid flow path. The pump arrangement (11) is configured for connection to a supply system (1) of treatment fluid for the blood treatment unit (8) such that alternating flows of treatment fluid generated by the supply system (1) and supplied to the first and second membrane pumps (6, 7) causes the pump arrangement (11) to generate the desired flows of blood in the single-needle and double- needle modes. The treatment fluid may be used as motive fluid for displacing the blood in the membrane pumps (6, 7) and/or as control fluid for controlling opening and/or closing of upstream and downstream commutation valves (34, 35) in the membrane pumps (6, 7).

Centrifugation systems and methods are provided for separating blood into its constituent parts. Inner and outer walls of a centrifuge each include a projection which extends toward the other wall. A separation chamber is received in the centrifuge between the walls, with the chamber including an inlet port for flowing blood into the chamber, a plasma outlet port for flowing plasma out of the chamber, and a red cell outlet port for flowing red blood cells out of the chamber. With the chamber received in the centrifuge between the walls, the first projection extends into the path of separated blood components flowing toward the plasma outlet port and prevents cellular blood components from flowing into the plasma outlet port. The second projection extends into the path of separated blood components flowing toward the red cell outlet port and prevents plasma from flowing into the red cell outlet port.

An apparatus for delivery of fluids to a patient includes an inlet tube and an outlet tube connected to each other at an angular joint. A rotary valve and a piston are fitted to the angular joint forming a chamber. The rotary valve is provided with a priming channel notch and a pumping notch. For priming operation with the fluid delivery apparatus, a user sets the rotary valve to a priming position. During pumping operation, the rotary valve rotates in coordination with the piston to transfer a quantum of fluid from the inlet tube to the outlet tube via the chamber. A second piston is optionally provided on the outlet tube for smoothing out flow rate pulsations.
