The invention relates to a dialysis machine capable of performing ultrafiltration without the need for a dedicated ultrafiltration pump. The system uses a pair of membrane flow balance pumps wherein the operation and/or the volume flow rate of the pumps can be modified during operation to bring about a net movement of dialysate either into or from the dialyser. The direction of flow of the dialysate in the dialyzer is reversible and the dialyzer can comprise two dialysate inlets, one at each end, and two dialysate outlets, one at each end.

A valved manifold module is disclosed, constructed and arranged to be readily connected in a chain with similar modules to form a manifold assembly. The modular nature of the apparatus allows for convenient expansion or modification of the manifold assembly to suit any application that comprises a group of pneumatically or hydraulically driven pumps, valves or combinations thereof in a liquid flow control apparatus. The valved manifold module in an example can be configured to accept a group of four substantially identical valve assemblies, and can be controlled by a local controller mounted to the manifold module, thus forming an independently programmable valved manifold module. The resulting modular system is readily expandable to allow for coordinated operations of a liquid flow control system, using substantially independent controller functions originating at the manifold assembly level.

Described herein is a modular ventilator. The ventilator has modular flow control devices (4200), which are connected to fluid inlet adapters (4120). The modular flow control devices have sensors (4400) for controlling fluid flow through the modular flow control devices. The fluid inlet adapters are removable, and can include magnetic indicators (4124), and the ventilator can identify the fluid from the magnetic indicator. The ventilator can also contain or be connected to a device having a low-noise blower (100).

Described herein is a flow control valve for a ventilator that controls gas flow through a patient line in response to a target pressure within the line. The valve controls gas flow by (i) providing both a high frequency signal and a low frequency signal through a coil positioned in a fixed magnetic field, (ii) determining a position of the coil by detecting the high frequency signal, and (iii) controlling a position of the coil by adjusting the low frequency signal based on the determined position and/or velocity of the coil.

A disposable cassette (1) for storing and delivering a medical drug, the cassette (1) comprising a cartridge (7) containing the medical drug, a waste reservoir (8) arranged to receive waste liquid and/or gas, an injection needle (9) arranged to deliver the medical drug, and a valve block (10) being movable between a first position and a second position. The first position establishes a fluid passage between the cartridge (7) and the waste reservoir (8), while preventing fluid flow from the cartridge (7) to the injection needle (9), and the second position establishes a fluid passage between the cartridge (7) and the injection needle (9), while preventing fluid flow from the cartridge (7) to the waste reservoir (8). The cartridge (7), the waste reservoir (8), the valve block (10) and at least part of the injection needle (9) are arranged inside a cassette housing (2), and the valve block (10) is operable to be moved between the first position and the second position without a user operating the cassette (1) coming into direct contact with parts arranged inside the cassette housing (2).

The invention relates to a blood treatment device, in particular a device which can perform haemodialysis and haemodifiltration procedures. This is achieved using an interconnected pump and valve arrangement which can be controlled to direct fluid across a dialysis membrane or parallel to said membrane depending on the type of processing required. This allows dynamic variation between modes of operation and treatment.

A fluid control system for delivery of a liquid includes a pneumatic drive that incorporates a linear actuator to effect known volume changes in a gas reservoir. The gas reservoir is in fluid communication with a gas-side reservoir that is separated from a fluid-side reservoir by a flexible membrane. Movement of the linear actuator effects positive or negative volume differences on the gas in the gas-side reservoir, resulting in a decrease or increase in pressure of the gas that is transmitted to the fluid-side reservoir to draw fluid, primarily liquid, in from a source or deliver liquid out to a sink. In another aspect, a mechanism is provided for the detection and elimination of air bubbles in the fluid path.
