For example, a multi-podal cadmium selenide nanocrystal may be produced by a method including heating a degassed mixture comprising cadmium oxide, selenium, trioctylphosphine, and a carboxylic acid in a non-coordinating solvent from about room temperature to about 210°C, where the multi-podal cadmium selenide nanocrystal may be a tetrapodal cadmium selenide nanocrystal.

Composites having semiconductor structures embedded in a matrix are described. In an example, a composite includes a matrix material. A plurality of semiconductor structures is embedded in the matrix material. Each semiconductor structure includes an anisotropic nanocrystalline core composed of a first semiconductor material and having an aspect ratio between, but not including, 1.0 and 2.0. Each semiconductor structure also includes a nanocrystalline shell composed of a second, different, semiconductor material at least partially surrounding the anisotropic nanocrystalline core. An insulator layer encapsulates each nanocrystalline shell and anisotropic nanocrystalline core pairing.

A quantum nanomaterial having a bandgap that may be tuned to enable the quantum nanomaterial to detect IR radiation in selected regions including throughout the MWIR region and into the LWIR region is provided. The quantum nanomaterials include tin telluride (SnTe) nanomaterials and/or lead tin telluride (PbxSn1-xTe) nanomaterials. Additionally, a method of manufacturing nanomaterial that is tunable for detecting IR radiation in selected regions, such as throughout the MWIR region and into the LWIR region, is also provided.

The present invention provides hexagonal zinc oxide structures having various shapes. The zinc oxide may be formed into a crystalline rod, a tree structure, and a hemispherical structure. These zinc oxide structures can be applied to a light-emitting diode. The light-emitting diode has excellent light extraction efficiency due to the zinc oxide structure applied thereto.
