Abstract:
A field emission transistor uses carbon nanotubes positioned to extend along a substrate plane rather than perpendicularly thereto. The carbon nanotubes may be pre-manufactured and applied to the substrate and then may be etched to create a gap between the carbon nanotubes and an anode through which electrons may flow by field emission. A planar gate may be positioned beneath the gap to provide a triode structure.
Abstract:
A 3-D printer scalable to large sizes employs a combination of mechanical and electrical scanning of a linear array of electron beams that operate to melt material of a powder bed. A housing holding the electron beam sources may be maintained at a high vacuum and positioned close to a print, surface to minimize electron travel in a softer vacuum surrounding a print bed.
Abstract:
A multifunction avionics server provide for the execution of both certified and uncertified applications in data-serving capacities in which one certified application provides near real-time transmission of flight data recorder type of data. By combining these functions, improved aircraft monitoring is obtained without significant cost or weight penalties.
Abstract:
A computer architecture provides a memory cache that is accessed not by physical addresses by virtual addresses directly from running processes. Ambiguities that can result from multiple virtual addresses mapping to a single physical address are handled by dynamically tracking synonyms and connecting a limited number of virtual synonyms mapping to the same physical address to a single key virtual address that is used exclusively for cache access.
Abstract:
A mattress for institutional use provides upper and lower surfaces offering different levels of firmness through the use of gradiated firmness in multiple polymer foam layers.
Abstract:
A varying capacitance rotating electrical machine provides capacitor elements, such as capacitor plates, that move with respect to each other as separated by a thin film of fluid, for example air, on which one capacitor element floats. In one embodiment, multiple plates provide for three-phase operation. Narrow gaps provided by the floating capacitor elements increase the power density of rotating electrical machine.
Abstract:
An electrical rotating machine, such as a generator or motor, communicates power from a stationary location to the rotating rotor of the rotating machine via opposed pairs of capacitor plates, one plate of each pair rotating with the rotor and one plate of each pair fixed not to rotate. In one embodiment, separation between the plates of the pair is provided by a cushion of entrapped air.
Abstract:
Execution of a computer program on a multiprocessor system is monitored to detect possible excess parallelism causing resource contention and the like and, in response, to controllably limit the number of processors applied to parallelize program components.
Abstract:
A microwave hyperthermia treatment system employs a set of antennas individually controllable to provide different phase and amplitude outputs and controlled to cycle through different sets of phases and amplitudes over time to minimize the effect of hotspots formed by any given set of phases and amplitudes and creating limiting high temperatures outside of a desired treatment area.
Abstract:
A system and method of parallelizing programs employs runtime instructions to identify data accessed by program portions and to assign those program portions to particular processors based on potential overlap between the access data. Data dependence between different program portions may be identified and used to look for pending "predicate" program portions that could create data dependencies and to postpone program portions that may be dependent while permitting parallel execution of other program portions.
