    Abstract: An illumination system has a plurality (2) of light-collimating sections (12, 12', 12") and a light-mixing section (3). The light-collimating sections are arranged substantially parallel to each other along a longitudinal axis (25) of the illumination system. Each of the light-collimating sections is associated with at least one light emitter (R, G, B). Each of the light emitters is being in optical contact with the respective light-collimating section via a dielectric material with a refractive index larger than or equal to 1.3. At a side facing away from the light emitters, the light-collimating sections merge into the light­mixing, the light-collimating sections and the light-mixing section forming one integral part. Light propagation in the light-mixing section is based on total internal reflection and the light-mixing section has a plurality of faces parallel to the longitudinal axis. Preferably, the light-mixing section at a side facing away from the light emitters is provided with a further light-collimating section.

    Abstract: An optical system having a first mode for scanning a first optical record carrier of a first type and having an information layer (2) at a first information layer depth (4), and a second mode for scanning a second optical record carrier of a second, different, type having an information layer (3) at a second, different, information layer depth (5), the optical system having a parameter which is variable. The optical system comprises a radiation source system (6 & 18) for generating a first radiation beam (7) in the first mode and a second, different, radiation beam (8) in the second mode; one or more optical elements for focusing either the first radiation beam (7) to a spot on the information layer (2) of the first record carrier in the first mode, or the second radiation beam (8) to a spot (26) on the information layer of the second record carrier in the second mode; and a compensator (16) having a phase structure comprising annular areas forming a non-periodic pattern of optical paths of different lengths. The compensator (16) is arranged to compensate a first wavefront deviation (WI) introduced during scanning of the information layer (2) of the first optical record carrier with said first radiation beam (7) in the first mode and is additionally arranged to compensate a second wavefront deviation (W2) introduced to said second radiation beam (8) upon variation of said parameter of the optical system in the second mode.

    Abstract: An optical device (1) for scanning three information layers (2, 2', 2") by means of three radiation beams (20, 20’, 20’’) having three respective wavelengths (λ 1 , λ 2 , λ 3 ) and polarizations (p 1 , p 2 , p 3 ), wherein the three wavelengths substantially differ from each other. The device comprises a radiation source (7) for emitting the three radiation beams, an objective lens system (8) for converging the three radiation beams beam on the positions of the three respective information layers, and a phase structure (24) having a non-periodic stepped profile. Furthermore, the structure includes birefringent material sensitive to the three polarizations and the stepped profile is designed for introducing three wavefront modifications (ΔW 1 , ΔW 2 , ΔW 3 ) for the three wavelengths, respectively, wherein one of the wavefront modifications is of a type different from the others and one of the polarizations differs from the others.

    Abstract: An optical head (1) for scanning an optical record carrier (2) is provided with a compensator (16) for compensating the field curvature aberration of the objective system (18) caused by operation of the optical head at a different field angles. A surface of the compensator (16) comprises a phase structure in the form of annular areas (52, 53, 54, 55, 56), the areas forming a non-periodic pattern of optical paths of different lengths. The optical paths change as a function of field angle and form a field angle-dependent wavefront deviation that compensates field curvature of the optical head.
