Wässrige Dispersionen von vernetzten, tertiäre Estergruppen enthaltenden Emulsionspolymerisaten, (a) mindestens 50 Gew.-% eines Esters, der sich von einem tertiären Alkohol und einer ethylenisch ungesättigten C 3 - bis C 5 -Carbonsäure ableitet, (b) 0,001 bis 5,0 Gew.-% mindestens einer Verbindung, die mindestens zwei ethylenisch ungesättigte Doppelbindungen aufweist, und (c) 0 bis 49,999 Gew.-% mindestens einer anderen monoethylenisch ungesättigten Verbindung einpolymerisiert enthalten und eine mittlere Teilchengröße von höchstens 1000 nm haben, und wasserabsorbierende Materialien, die erhältlich sind durch Beschichten eines Trägermaterials mit der beschriebenen wässrigen Dispersion von vernetzten, tertiäre Estergruppen enthaltenden Emulsionspolymerisaten, Trocknen und Erhitzen des so behandelten Trägermaterials auf eine Temperatur von mindestens 1400C unter Bildung von Carboxylgruppen aus den tertiären Estergruppen des Emulsionspolymerisats und mindestens teilweise Neutralisation der Carboxylgruppen sowie die Verwendung der wasserabsorbierenden Materialien als Absorptionsmittel für Wasser und wässrige Flüssigkeiten.
