Abstract:
The invention provide a new class of silicone-containing prepolymers containing dangling hydrophilic polymer chains. This class of silicone-containing prepolymer is capable of being actinically crosslinked to form a silicone hydrogel material with a hydrophilic surface without post curing surface treatment. The present invention is also related to silicone hydrogel contact lenses made from this class of silicone-containing prepolymers and to methods for making the silicone hydrogel contact lenses.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a method for producing a medical device, preferably an ophthalmic device, more preferably a contact lens, made of a stabilized poly(oxyalkylene)containing polymeric material. The method of the invention comprises the steps of: curing, in a mold, a composition comprising (a) a prepolymer having at least one poly(oxyalkylene) unit, (b) a biocompatible organic multi-acid or biocompatible salt thereof in an amount sufficient to improve the stability of the poly(oxyalkylene)-containing polymer made from the composition, (c) optionally a photoinitiator or a thermal initiator, and (d) optionally one or more vinylic monomers, to form the medical device being less susceptible to oxidative degradation; and removing the medical device from the mold.
Abstract:
The invention provide a class of water-processable polymerizable prepolymers which comprises (1) siloxane-containing monomeric units derived at least one siloxane containing monomer having one hydrophilic group or chain and/or polysiloxane-containing crosslinking units derived from at least one hydrophilized polysiloxane or chain-extended polysiloxane crosslinker; (2) hydrophilic monomeric units derived from one or more hydrophilic vinylic monomers; and (3) from about 0.05% to about 5% by weight of polymerizable units each having a pendant or terminal, ethylenically-unsaturated group and free of any polysiloxane segment. The prepolymer comprises from about 20% to about 50% by weight of silicone relative to the total weight of the prepolymer and has a high water solubility or dispersibility of at least about 5% by weight in water and suitable for making silicone hydrogel contact lenses.

Abstract:
The instant invention pertains to a method and a fluid composition for producing contact lenses with relatively high edge quality and with relatively high precision and fidelity in reproducing a desired lens design. The method of the invention involves: a mold which has a first mold half with a first molding surface and a second mold half with a second molding surface, wherein the first and second mold halves are configured to receive each other such that the cavity is formed between the first and second molding surfaces which define the opposite two surfaces of a contact lens to be produced; a spatial limitation of actinic radiation to define the edge of the contact lens to be produced; and addition of a radical scavenger in a fluid composition comprising a lens-forming material to reduce substantially the crosslinking/polymerizing, caused by diffused, scattered and/or reflected incident actinic radiation, of the fluid composition outside of and around the spatial limitation of actinic radiation.

The instant invention pertains to a method and a fluid composition for producing contact lenses with improved lens quality and with increased product yield. The method of the invention involves applying to a molding surface of the mold a layer of mold releasing agent selected from a group consisting of fatty amines of carbon chain length C18 or less and silicones bearing pendant substituted pyrrolidone groups solution to reduce an averaged mold separation force by at least about 50% in comparison with that without the releasing agent.
