    Abstract: A process and system for measuring, positioning and welding a bracket 30 to a mounting surface, such as a vehicle side rail 40, to accomplish smooth and continuous bracket assembly. A bracket positioning tool 20 on a robotic arm 10 allows brackets 30 to adjust to minimize the gap between the bracket 30 and its intended mounting surface. The bracket positioning tool 20 positions brackets 30 near the surface, and allows brackets 30 to adjust for a precise surface match. With input from a second measurement, a welding robot 50 welds the bracket 30 to the surface with the gap minimized while the bracket 30 is held in position. The measurement system and bracket positioning with flexible tooling do not require the bracket 30 to be forced with pressure against the mounting surface. With robots, brackets can be consistently placed and welded in precise locations on varying mounting surfaces.

    Abstract: A continuous induction heat treating apparatus is provided including a conveyor path defining an axis for a workpiece to be conveyed through the apparatus. The apparatus includes an induction heating station positioned along the conveyor path and operable to induce heating in the workpiece as the workpiece is conveyed through the induction heating station. A quenching station is positioned in a downstream direction from the induction heating station. The quenching station is coupled to a water supply and includes a plurality of sprayers in fluid communication with the water supply and operable to spray water toward the axis for quenching the workpiece as the workpiece is conveyed through the quenching station. The apparatus further includes a quench adjustment mechanism including an actuator coupled to at least a first one of the plurality of sprayers for re-positioning a point of intersection defined between the first sprayer and the axis.

    Abstract: Method and apparatus for providing a C-shaped member or component (98), each having an elongate body (144) constructed from a continuous metal sheet (110) that extends along a length of the elongate body between distal first (146) and second ends (148) thereof. The elongate body has a generally C-shaped cross-section along a substantial entirety of the length of the body between the distal first and second ends. The generally C-shaped cross-section is formed by a top and bottom flanges (126) joined together by a web (124). The top and bottom flanges each have thicknesses greater than the web. The sheet (110) of metal has a first configuration in which the thickness of the sheet is substantially uniform thereacross and a second configuration in which the thickness of a strip (104) of the sheet of metal corresponding to the web (124) is thinner than in the first configuration. A further alternative embodiment considers providing a close-shaped member or component for the same purposes described herein.

    Abstract: A welding method and system (4) using a robotic arm (10), a welding robot (18) and a welding table (2) placed at an angle from horizontal to hold two C-channels (6 and 8) facing each other to maintain position and be welded together. C-channels (6 and 8) face each other to form a closed channel at increased welding speed with less materials having resulting benefits including constant welding, less distortion, and less welding material. Welding begins with restraining C-channels (6 and 8) in conjunction with the angled welding table (2). A robotic arm (10) handles C-channels (6 and 8) to move, place and restrain them relative to each other and the welding table (2). A pressing tool (12) may be a set of pressure-exerting tools (26). A welding robot (18) with a seam finding system (24) preferably welds the restrained C-channels (6 and 8) from top to bottom.

    Abstract: An apparatus for induction heat treating and quenching a metallic part with rolls to convey, guide and restrain the part during processing. The apparatus includes a heating coil assembly with a coil section configured to surround the part, the coil section having a spacing relative to an outer surface of the part that varies as a function of the cross sectional geometry of the part. The heating coil assembly may include two sections of coils wound in opposite directions. The apparatus may include a quenching station with individual quenching sections having different pressures and flows of a liquid. A process for induction heat treating and quenching a metallic part in a series of rolls includes induction heating the part in a coil assembly including a coil section configured to surround the part with a variable spacing; quenching the part with a liquid while under restraint, and induction heating the part again after quenching.     Abstract: A system for positioning and welding a bracket (30) to a mounting surface, such as a vehicle side rail (40), including using a pivoting tool (20) on a moveable arm (10) that allows the bracket (30) to pivot to minimize the gap between the bracket (30) and its intended mounting surface. The pivoting tool (20) secures, positions near the surface, and allows the bracket (30) to pivot for a precise surface match.     Abstract: An apparatus for induction heat treating and quenching a metallic part with rolls to convey, guide and restrain the part during processing. The apparatus includes a heating coil assembly with two sections of coils wound in opposite directions. The apparatus may include a quenching station with individual quenching sections having different pressures and flows of a liquid.
