Abstract:
A wall flow type particulate filter (24) is arranged inside the exhaust passage of an internal combustion engine where combustion is performed under an excess of oxygen. The particulate filter carries a solid acid. The solid acid has a Hammett acidity function smaller than -0.83 and larger than -12 in the standard state. To remove the ash from the particulate filter, ash atomization processing for rendering the state of the particulate filter a state where the exhaust gas which flows into the particulate filter is lowered in concentration of oxygen and the particulate filter is raised in temperature is temporarily performed.
Abstract:
Engine air-fuel ratio controlling means is provided to control an exhaust air-fuel ratio that is the ratio between the air contained in the exhaust gas discharged from the engine (1) and the fuel element contained in the same exhaust gas and acting as a reducing agent at a NOx catalyst by controlling the air- fuel ratio of the gas combusted in the engine (1). Fuel adding means (17) is provided upstream of the NOx catalyst (9) in an exhaust passage to add fuel into the exhaust gas. During the SOx poisoning recovery control, when developing a state enabling SOx reduction reactions, the exhaust gas air- fuel ratio of the exhaust gas discharged from the engine and the amount of fuel added from the fuel adding means (17) are controlled to minimize the sum of the amount of fuel injected in the engine and the amount of fuel added from the fuel adding means.

A method of removing ash from a wall flow type particulate filter which is arranged in an exhaust passage of an internal combustion engine in which combustion is performed in an excess of oxygen for trapping particulate matter in exhaust gas, using a solid acid which is carried on the particulate filter, renders the state of the particulate filter a state where the exhaust gas which flows into the particulate filter is lowered in concentration of oxygen and the particulate filter is raised in temperature, and then renders the state of the particulate filter a state where the exhaust gas which flows into the particulate filter in an oxidizing atmosphere contains SOx.

Abstract:
A temperature sensor (10) includes temperature detecting means and at least one of a catalyst and an adsorbent applied to the surface of the temperature detecting means. At least one of the catalyst and the adsorbent catalyzes an exothermic reaction of a reactant in gas on the temperature detecting means. A temperature that is increased by the exothermic reaction is detected by the temperature detecting means. The catalytic efficiency for the exothermic reaction of at least one of the catalyst and the adsorbent is reduced by sulfur poisoning. The temperature sensor (10) is disposed upstream of an exhaust purification system (30). Accordingly, it is determined that the temperature sensor is subjected to sulfur poisoning if the temperature detected by the temperature sensor is below a prescribed temperature.
Abstract:
An exhaust purification system of an internal combustion engine arranging in an engine exhaust passage an NOx storing reducing catalyst storing NOx contained in exhaust gas when an air-fuel ratio of inflowing exhaust gas is lean and reducing and purifying stored NOx when the air-fuel ratio of the inflowing exhaust gas becomes a stoichiometric air-fuel ratio or rich, which system is provided with an NOx production reducing means for reducing an amount of production of NOx produced in a combustion chamber due to change of a combustion state of the engine and temporarily reduces the amount of production of NOx by the NOx production reducing means when an amount of N 2 O flowing out from the NOx storing reducing catalyst is anticipated to exceed an allowable amount.

A wall flow type particulate filter (24) adapted to be arranged in an exhaust passage of an internal combustion engine in which combustion is performed in an excess of oxygen carries a solid acid. The solid acid has an acid strength which is higher than the acid strength of sulfurous acid and lower than the acid strength of sulfuric acid.
