Astaxanthinzusammensetzungen, die wenigstens 50 Gew.-%, insbesondere wenigstens 60 Gew.-%, besonders bevorzugt wenigstens 70 Gew.-% und speziell wenigstens 80 Gew.-% oder wenigstens 90 Gew.-%, bezogen auf das Gesamtgewicht an Astaxanthin und Astaxanthinderivaten in der Zusammensetzung, einen Monoester des Astaxanthins mit einer C18-1 -Fettsäure enthalten, weisen eine besonderes gute Bioverfügbarkeit auf. Sie eignen sich daher in besonderer Weise für den Einsatz in Nahrungsmitteln, Nahrungsergänzüngsmitteln oder Futtermitteln sowie zur therapeutischen Verwendung als Medikament sowie als Inhaltsstoff für medizinische Zubereitungen bzw. pharmazeutische Mittel.
