Abstract: The log saw clamp (10) of the present invention includes a brace (34) and at least one jaw (38) connected to an actuation member (30). The preferred embodiment has two jaws (26) supporting the logs from below, the brace (34) restraining logs from above and the actuation member connected to both ends of the brace. The diameter of the log receiving area (110) can be adjusted by moving the actuation members. Linear movement of the actuation members causes the jaws to pivote and the brace to translate such that the diameter of the log receiving area is increased or decreased. The jaws are pivotally connected to the actuation member via jaw mounts (74). The actuation member is preferably moved with a turn wheel (90) and gear assembly (94). The brace is spring loaded (42) to the actuation member. The jaws can be interchanged with differently sized and shaped jaws to accomodate differently size logs.

Abstract: A flying web splice apparatus (14) and method for splicing a moving web of material (16) to another web of material without tape or adhesives being used at the splice. Two splicer assemblies (12, 14) are provided, each of which has a series of vacuum belts (56, 76) and vacuum boxes (66, 86). The series of belts for each splicer assembly are preferably rotatable about a top pivot (62, 64) to bring a bottom portion of each series of belts together. In operation, one series of belts is driven by a motor (68, 88) to drag an initially-stationary web toward a pressure bonding mechanism (110, 114; 112, 116) at an end of the belts. By the time the initially-stationary web reaches the pressure bonding mechanism, the initially-stationary web is at the speed of the adjacent initially-moving web and can be precisely spliced thereto.

Abstract: A splice is made, between a tail end of first web and a lead end of a second web coiled about an unwind axis, by winding a portion of the first web adjacent the tail end of the first web about a splicing roll mounted for rotation about a splice roll axis oriented substantially parallel to the unwind axis, and then joining the tail end to the lead end by compressing an adhesive between an inside surface of the tail end and an outer surface of the second web. Compression of the adhesive is accomplished by urging the splice roll against the coiled second web while the coiled second web is rotating about the unwind axis in an unwind direction and the splicing roll is rolling about the splice roll axis in a direction opposite to the unwind direction.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for sealing the tail (T) of a rolled product (L) against the rolled product. After being positioned in a location upon a roller (36), the rolled product is rotated between the roller and a conveyor assembly (6) until a jet (44) blows the unsealed tail against the roller. By further rotating the roller, a sensor detects the location of the tail end for determining tail length in later operations. The roller is reversed to pass the tail around the roller and preferably to a tail support (40) adjacent the roller. When the tail reaches a desired position along the tail support, an applicator sensor (52) sends a signal to an adhesive assembly (42) which applies adhesive to the tail and/or the rolled product. After the adhesive has been applied, the roller is again reversed to roll the tail back upon the rolled product. The rewound rolled product is then preferably rolled over at least one ironing roller (172).
