Abstract: This invention relates to fertilizer compositions containing phosphorus that is derived from steepwater, e.g., corn steepwater, and methods of making fertilizer from steepwater. In one implementation, steepwater is mixed with an alkaline metal hydroxide, which is added in an amount effective to precipitate at least about 75% of the phosphorus in the steepwater. A phosphorus-rich precipitate is separated from the steepwater; the precipitate includes an organic phosphorous component and an inorganic phosphorous component, which may include a phosphorous salt of the metal. At least a majority of the organic phosphorus component may be converted to inorganic phosphorous, improving its bioavailability to growing plants.
