    Abstract: A process for the production of hemicellulose-derived monosaccharides comprising: (a) contacting an aqueous hemicellulosic stream with a C 3-8 alkyl alcohol at elevated temperature and acidic pH to produce a reaction mixture comprising a C 3-8 alkyl ester and a hemicellulose-derived monosaccharide; and (b) separating the reaction mixture obtained from step (a) into an aqueous phase comprising said hemicellulose-derived monosaccharide and an organic phase comprising said C 3-8 alkyl ester. The product of step (b) may be further processed using an optional step: (c) reacting said hemicellulose-derived monosaccharide obtained from step (b) with a metal hydroxide or a quaternary ammonium hydroxide to produce a metal lactate or quaternary ammonium lactate.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a method for isolating xylan from plant material. In the method, cellulose fibres which contain xylan are used, advantageously cellulose fibres from hardwood; and xylan is extracted (20) from said cellulose fibres by means of sodium hydroxide for forming an extract solution (17) that contains xylan; cellulose fibres are removed from said mixture that contains cellulose fibres and extract solution (17), for isolating said extract solution from said mixture; carbon dioxide (14) is added to said extract solution (17) for isolating xylan, wherein liquid brightener (18) and precipitated xylan (12) are formed; calcium hydroxide (16) is added to said isolated brightener (18), for forming precipitated calcium carbonate and liquid sodium hydroxide (15); and sodium hydroxide is removed from said mixture that contains sodium hydroxide and precipitated calcium carbonate, for isolating calcium carbonate from said mixture.     Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for reductive amination of a water soluble carbohydrate. An aminated water soluble carbohydrate is a prerequisite in processes for further modification of cellulose. The synthesis of this molecule comprises, providing a water soluble carbohydrate, an amine and a reducing agent, which are reacted under acidic conditions, isolated to give an aminated water soluble carbohydrate with a yield larger than 60%.
