Abstract:

Abstract:
Various processes are disclosed for producing nanocellulose materials following steam extraction or hot-water digestion of biomass. Processes are also disclosed for producing nanocellulose materials from a wide variety of starting pulps or pretreated biomass feedstocks. The nanocellulose materials may be used as rheology modifiers in many applications. Water-based and oil-based drilling fluid formulations and additives are provided. Also, water-based and oil-based hydraulic fracturing fluid formulations and additives are provided. In other embodiments, polymer-nanocellulose composites are provided.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a process for converting biomass comprising lignin, hemicellulose or combinations thereof, to valuable components, where the process comprises the step of treating biomass comprising lignin, hemicellulose or combinations thereof with deep eutectic solvent.
Abstract:
A process is provided for producing a biomass-derived rheology modifier, comprising: providing a pretreated feedstock comprising cellulose-rich solids; refining the cellulose-rich solids in a first high-intensity refining unit, generating refined cellulose solids; gelling the refined cellulose solids in a second high-intensity refining unit, thereby generating gelled cellulose solids; and homogenizing the gelled cellulose solids in a high-shear homogenizer, thereby generating a biomass-derived rheology modifier. The pretreated feedstock may include kraft pulp, sulfite pulp, AVAP® pulp, soda pulp, mechanical pulp, thermomechanical pulp, and/or chemimechanical pulp, derived from wood or lignocellulosic biomass. The pretreated feedstock may be GP3+® pulp, obtained from steam or hot-water extraction of lignocellulosic biomass. These rheology modifiers may be utilized in a wide variety of applications, including water-based or oil-based hydraulic fracturing fluid formulations, as gelling agents. These rheology modifiers are biodegradable, and their production does not directly involve chemicals other than biomass and water.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a novel process for producing hemicellulose fractions from cereal crops, comprising pressurized hot water extraction of hemicellulose fractions from cereal crops in combination with subsequent enzymatic treatments and/or subsequent membrane ultrafiltration to further purify the extracts. The novel process described herein allows for sustainable and scalable extraction and isolation of valuable hemicellulose fractions, especially arabinoxylans (AXs), from cereal side products. The process allows the selective fractionation of arabinoxylans based on their molecular structure and inherent functionalities, which can e.g. be used for the preparation of carbohydrate-based materials with functional properties.
Abstract:
Methods and systems are provided for improved liquefaction of a lignocellulosic biomass. The methods include reacting a lignocellulosic biomass slurry at mild conditions for a short period to produce a first reaction mixture having a reduced viscosity as compared to the lignocellulosic biomass slurry and that is substantially free of levulinic acid and hydroxymethylfurfural. The methods further include separating the first reaction mixture into a solid fraction and a liquid fraction, the solid fraction having a majority of lignin from the lignocellulosic biomass slurry and the liquid fraction having a majority of hemicellulose and greater than about 30% by weight of cellulose from the lignocellulosic biomass slurry. The method advantageously prevents or eliminates the formation of tar and/or char.
Abstract:
The present disclosure provides systems, compositions and methods for the processing of cereal grains, and in particular wheat, as well as optimized enzyme compositions suitable for that particular purpose.
Abstract:
A process for treating a cellulosic material comprising pretreating the cellulosic material and then extracting the cellulosic material with an extractant to selectively extract hemicellulose therefrom and separating the extracted hemicellulose to form a cellulosic product comprising less hemicellulose than the cellulosic material. The extractant comprises a cellulose solvent and a co-solvent. The cellulosic product advantageously retains its cellulosic fiber morphology. The processes involve separating and recovering the hemicellulose and separating and recycling various process streams employed in the process.
Abstract:
Disclosed are methods of functionalizing lignin using reactive extraction. The invention also generally relates to functionalized lignin. An examplary method for producing functionalized lignin is disclosed, which comprises: providing a residue comprising lignin and cellulose; subjecting the residue to a liquid comprising an organic compound, thereby forming a first mixture; wherein the subjecting is performed at a first temperature of about 100°C or less; and wherein the first mixture comprises: a first liquid fraction comprising solubilized functionalized lignin, wherein the solubilized functionalized lignin is functionalized with the organic compound; and a first solid fraction comprising cellulose.
