A system and method for wireless devices to efficiently receive communications by transmitting and receiving specialized beacon messages. Particularly, a wireless device may await reception of a synchronizing beacon message from a transmitting device. A relative position identifier within the synchronizing beacon message may then allow the wireless device to anticipate future beacon message transmissions and to synchronize its reception pattern with the transmitter. In this manner the wireless device need only receive and decode beacon messages germane to its operation.

For certain aspects, the AP may poll the stations for updated CSI values. For certain aspects, deterministic back-off timers may be assigned to the stations indicating when to send their CSI feedback. The proposed methods may improve system performance.

In a WLAN according to IEEE 802.11, a large amount of channel time can be consumed by beacons and probe responses. This can be particularly true in dense networks. Several solutions are provided: 1. The channel time can be reduced by transmitting frames such as probe responses at a high rate. 2. The rate at which the probe responses are sent can be selected via a rate function described herein. 3. The channel time can be reduced by omitting neighbor information in frames such as beacons and probe responses unless requested by a station. 4. (Claimed invention) Channel time can be reduced by omitting at least some data shared between probe requests and association requests. The method of wireless communication includes receiving, at an access point, a probe request, decoding the probe request to determine shared wireless device state information, storing the shared wireless device state information for at least a timeout period, transmitting a probe response indicating the timeout period; and receiving an association request omitting the wireless device state information within the timeout period. 5. The channel time may be reduced by omitting at least some data shared between probe responses and association responses.
