    Abstract: An apparatus for detecting a presence of an object is provided. The apparatus comprises an inductive sensing coil that is configurable to generate a magnetic field, the inductive sensing coil configured to have an electrical characteristic that is detectable when generating the magnetic field. The apparatus comprises an actuator configured to inducing relative motion between the inductive sensing coil and the object while the inductive sensing coil generates the magnetic field. The apparatus comprises a controller configured to detect a change in the electrical characteristic, and determine a presence of the object based on the change in the electrical characteristic correlating with the relative motion between the inductive sensing coil and the object. The electrical characteristic comprises one or more of an equivalent resistance, an equivalent inductance, an equivalent impedance, and an impulse response of the inductive sensing coil.

    Abstract: Guidance and alignment systems are disclosed for wireless charging systems to assist in aligning the transmitter and receiver inductive power transfer (IPT) couplers. These systems guide positioning and alignment to provide sufficient coupling between the transmitter and receiver IPT couplers. Exemplary systems provide a magnetic field sensor, magnetic field generator, and magnetic vectoring to determine a position of an electric vehicle or a wireless charging base. In a magnetic vectoring system, an alignment system comprising at least three coils (or similar circuits) on a magnetically permeable substrate receives a positioning magnetic field including modulated information signals and processes the received signal to generate an output for determining a position of the positioning magnetic field source relative to the magnetic field sensor position. The alignment system may further comprise a similar structure that generates the positioning magnetic field, that may include modulated information signals, based on input signals.

    Abstract: In certain aspects, a method and apparatus for detecting foreign objects using heat sensitive material and inductive sensing is disclosed. In certain aspects, a foreign object detection system includes a heat sensing system comprising a heat sensitive material having a property configured to change as a function of temperature. The foreign object detection system further includes an inductive sensing system comprising one or more sense coils, wherein a change in an electrical characteristic of the one or more sense coils is indicative of presence of a foreign object. The foreign object detection system further includes a controller coupled to the heat sensing system and the inductive sensing system, wherein the controller is configured to determine presence of the foreign object based on at least one of a measure of the property of the heat sensitive material or a measure of the electrical characteristic of the one or more sense coils.

    Abstract: Exemplary embodiments are directed to wireless power transfer and Near-Field Communication (NFC) operation. An electronic device (400) includes an antenna (402) configured to resonate at an NFC frequency and generate an induced current. The electronic device further including rectifier circuitry (404) and NFC circuitry (410) each concurrently coupled to the induced current. The rectifier circuitry configured to rectify the induced current into DC power for the electronic device and the NFC circuitry configured to demodulate any data on the induced current.
