Once connected to the examination table, the wheelchair and patient sitting therein can be elevated, after which side frames of the wheelchair can be removed in order to facilitate examination of the patient. In addition, once elevated and the side frames removed, with the aid of a movable back that forms a part of the examination table, the back of the wheelchair can be reclined or positioned in various positions to facilitate examination and procedures.

A lift assist device is provided for securely clamping a wheelchair (16) and then elevating and forwardly tipping the wheelchair to assist the occupant in rising from it to a standing position. The device operates with any conventional wheelchair design, the device having plural adjustment means (15) to accommodate wheelchairs of varying size. The device eliminates the need for lift-assist wheelchairs to have their own integral lifting mechanisms which in the past have made such wheelchairs cumbersome and heavy. The present device is conveniently portable and much less expensive than wheelchairs with integral lift-assist mechanisms. Thus, the present invention provides wheelchair-bound persons with greater mobility than was previously available by greatly improving the usefulness of non-lift-assist wheelchairs, which can now be given lifting assistance by the present invention in a variety of settings.

El chasis (1) de la silla de ruedas comprende un mecanismo de grúa, que a su vez comprende un actuador (14) conectado por un extremo al respaldo (17) y por el otro extremo a los reposabrazos (10) para elevar al paciente, que se encuentra sujeto en el arnés (13), desplazando los reposabrazos (10) mediante el accionamiento del actuador (14).
