    Abstract: Described herein are expandable center arrangements for use in a tubular reactor, such as a reformer, for enhancing heat transfer and reactor efficiency. The expandable center arrangement can include a cone being expandable in the radial direction and an expansion weight for promoting expansion of the cone. The cone and expansion weight can be slidably arranged on a center support. Expansion of the cones in the radial direction forces reactor components radially outward to an outer tube that houses the reactor components and expandable center arrangement. Expansion of reactor components towards the outer tube promotes heat for carrying out catalytic reactions.

    Abstract: Surface-active solid-phase catalyst activity may be substantially improved by creating deliberate repetitive surface-to-surface contact between portions of the active surfaces of catalyst objects. While they are immersed in reactant material such contact between portions of the active surfaces of catalyst objects can substantially activate the surfaces of many heterogeneous catalysts. Examples are given of such action employing a multitude of predetermined shapes, supported catalyst structures, etc. agitated or otherwise brought into contact to produce numerous surface collisions. One embodiment employs a gear pump mechanism with catalytically active-surfaced gear teeth to create the repetitive transient contacting action during pumping of a flow of reactant. The invention is applicable to many other forms for creating transient catalytic surface contacting action. Optionally catalytic output of such systems may be significantly further improved by employing radiant energy or vibration.

    Abstract: A multitubular fixed bed reactor suitable for carrying out a catalytic process is described. There actor includes a plurality of reactor tubes, one or more of which include a fixed bed of catalyst and is/are at least partially surrounded by a heat transfer medium, preferably a cooling medium, wherein the one or morereactor tubes include at least one insert, especially a heat transfer insert and/or a pressure drop decreasing insert . Preferably the tubes are elongate, and preferably the inserts are elongate. The inserts may not extend the full length of their respective tube or tubes. The inserts may extend partly, substantially or wholly along the length of the relevant tube(s) . All the tubes of the reactor may include a heat transfer and insert. Most preferably, the insert of the present invention reduces temperature differentials in a reactor tube and decrease the pressure drop over the reactor tube, so as to minimise even temperature differences, and thus optimise reaction conditions and catalytic activity within the reactor tube.
