A dirt separator (8) for a vacuum cleaner (2) comprises a first separation stage (20) having a first dirt collection chamber (28) for storing dirt removed by the first separation stage (20); a second separation stage (22) positioned downstream of the first separation stage (20), the second separation stage (22) having a second dirt collection chamber (30) for storing dirt removed by the second separation stage (22); and a selectively-releasable latch mechanism (84). At least part of the latch mechanism (84) is provided on an outer surface of a sidewall of the second dirt collection chamber (30).
Abstract:
Multi-stage downhole oil-water separators are provided. An example system includes parallel arrays of downhole hydrocyclones, with multiple of the parallel arrays connected in hydraulic series to provide successive oil-water separation stages downhole. The arrays of hydrocyclones connected in hydraulic parallel, and the parallel arrays connected in hydraulic series are flow balanced and pressure balanced with respect to each other and situated into a housing suitable for the limited space of a downhole environment. The parallel arrays provide high throughput, while the multiple stages connected in series provide high separation resulting in high oil yield and substantially clean water.

At least one embodiment of the invention relates to a centrifugal/ cyclone separator which separates particles, liquid droplets and or condensing mists (water based and or hydrocarbon based nature) from gases without using a filter element.The design relies on the use of the inlet spiral tube, a first conical fin and the second conical fin, and the step on the cylindrical body and the extension of the vortex finder below second conical fin. With another embodiment, the design differs in that it relies on the insert with threaded or open area forming a flow path like spiral tube, while relying on the same or similar components as with the first embodiment listed above.

A surface treating appliance includes a first cyclonic separating unit including at least one first cyclone, and a second cyclonic separating unit located downstream from the first cyclonic separating unit and including a plurality of second cyclones arranged in parallel. The plurality of second cyclones is divided into at least a first set of second cyclones arranged about an axis, and a second set of second cyclones, the first set of second cyclones extending about the second set of second cyclones. Each second cyclone has a longitudinal axis, with the longitudinal axes of the first set of second cyclones being arranged at a first angle to said axis, and the longitudinal axes of the second set of second cyclones being arranged at a second angle to said axis, and wherein the first angle is greater than the second angle.

A pyrolysis and gasification system and method convert a biomass feed stock to bio-char and synthesis gas. In one embodiment, the pyrolysis and gasification system includes a reactor for producing a synthesis gas and bio-char from a biomass feedstock. The system includes a flow measurement device and an air distribution system, which provides a fluidized bed in the reactor. The system also includes a cyclone assembly. The cyclone assembly removes the bio-char from the synthesis gas.

A vortex separator for drawing a substantially moisture-free airstream from a waste stream having an annular channel defining a first vortex flow path for separating liquid and solid waste from this waste stream and preferably a filter unit with an inverted conical cavity between nested inverted cones defining a second vortex flow path that is isolated from the first vortex flow path for separating additional liquid and solid waste from the waste stream before it exits the vortex separator. In preferred embodiments, the separator includes a removable filter unit cartridge positioned within the outer cone and a helix isolator to respectively make use of the separator more convenient to use and more efficient.
