Abstract:
A welding apparatus is presented that allows for a controlled welding of steel cord ends. The welding apparatus allows for a controlled welding path from welding period over post-weld period to complete cool-down. In the welding apparatus a direct current source is controlled over time by means of a programmable controller. By sensing the voltage over the clamps of the welding apparatus and using this as a further input to the programmable controller, a constant power dissipation between the clamps can be achieved in the post-weld period. An associated method for making the weld is described wherein during the post-welding period the electric power dissipated between the clamps is held constant. The welds obtained by this procedure have a favourable metallographic structure in that the heat affected zone has more than 50% of pearlite and/or bainite over the total area of that zone.
Abstract:

Abstract:
A metal cord (100) comprising at least two metal strands (101 A-G). At least one strand (lO1D) is welded, said welded strand having an elongation at rupture of more than 30% of the elongation at rupture of an identical strand without weld.
Abstract:
A method for interconnecting tubulars by forge welding comprises: arranging the tubular ends (12, 12A) that are to be interconnected at a distance up to a few millimeters from each other in a shield gas chamber, into which a reducing non-explosive flushing fluid mixture (e.g. N 2 + H 2 ) is injected; heating each tubular end (12, 12A) within said space by means of at least three electrodes (2-5, 2A-5A) that are pressed at circumferentially spaced intervals against the wall of each tubular (1, 1A) adjacent to the tubular end (12, 12A) such that a high frequency electrical current (7) is transmitted in a substantially circumferential direction through the tubular segments between the electrodes (2-5, 2A-5A) ; and moving the thus uniformly heated tubular ends (12, 12A) towards each other until a forge weld is formed between the heated tubular ends (12, 12A).
Abstract:
The invention concerns a method and a machine for weld-bonding a valve seating ring (34) in an annular recess (30) of a cylinder head (20). The machine comprises an electrode tool (14) on which the ring is located and an overhead support (18, 40, 44, 46) for mounting the cylinder head above the tool. In use the tool is moved upwards into the recess while a welding current is passed across the cylinder head and the tool, whereby the ring is weld-bonded into the recess, without process spatter entering the cylinder head. There may be two separate tools (14, 16) which operate simultaneously on respective recesses (30 or 32) although the weld current may be applied sequentially.
