A carcass structure (3) of a tyre (2), previously formed on a building drum (14) is mounted on a primary drum (15), while a belt structure (4) is being made on an auxiliary drum (16). The primary drum (15) is supported by a robotized arm (21a, 21b) causing translation of said drum starting from a position at which it interacts with a member for transfer of the belt structure (4) onto the carcass structure (3), in order to sequentially submit it to the action of extruders (19, 19a, 20) each of which delivers a continuous strip-like element of elastomer material. Movement imparted to the primary drum (15) by the robotized arm (21a, 21b) in front of each extruder (19, 19a, 20) causes distribution of the strip-like element in circumferential coils disposed in side by side relationship, to form a layer of the desired thickness and geometric conformation for obtaining the sidewalls (6) and/or the tread band (5) of the tyre being processed.

A plant for building tyres contemplates a plurality of working locations (4a, 4b), at least one first working location (4a) being associated with at least two loading/unloading locations, a proximal one and a distal one, each of said working locations (4a, 4b) and loading/unloading locations being associable with a forming drum (2a, 2b, 2c, 2d). The production cycle is controlled by the method of : (i) loading a first forming drum (2a) into said at least one first working location (4a); (ii) loading a second forming drum (2b) into said distal loading/unloading location; (iii) at the end of the working provided in said at least one first working location (4a), unloading said first forming drum (2a) into said proximal loading/unloading location.
