Shaped, contoured crushable structural members (2) and methods for making the same are described. The contoured structural members comprise composite or metal materials (4, 8) sandwiching a support or stabilizing structure (6). The structural members (2) are made crushable by incorporating an initiator (14) into the structural members. The structural members (2) crushes at the location of the initiator (14) by absorbing the energy of an exerting load. The shaped structure is provided by bending the generally straight shape of the structural member. With a shaped, contoured, crushable, and generally non-flat structure, applications and uses for the structural members of the present invention are nearly limitless.

A spool (20) made of thick metal sheet for a fine metal wire comprises a core (22), and two flanges (24), coupled to the core (12). The core (22) comprises two concentric drums, an inner drum (26) with inner diameter d, and an outer drum (28) with outer diameter D. The spool changes the load distribution of side pressure on the flanges and further improves the structural rigidity of the spool to against deformation.

The contoured structural members (2) comprise composite materials and the contoured structure (2) can be provided by tube rolling (or roll wrapping) the composite materials together and then, if necessary, bonding them or connecting them. The outer surface (8) can be provided with a polygonal shape during the process of manufacturing. With a contoured structure and an outer polygonal shape, applications for the structural members of the present invention are increased.

The object of the invention is a cable reel, which includes a drum (2) made from sheet steel and ends (1) i.e. flanges attached to both sides. Curved tabs (4) are formed in the ends (1) of the drum (2) and extending in an axial direction through the ends (1), to which tabs corresponding curved slots (11) are formed. The parts of the tabs (4) extending from these slots (11) beyond the ends (1) are bent onto the external surface of the ends (1). The length and width of the tabs (4) in the direction of the circumference are so great taking into account the thickness of the sheet steel of the drum (2) and the diameter of the drum that the deformation work involved in bending the tabs due to the curved tabs is many times greater than compared to the bending of a straight tab. The invention is also concerned with a method for manufacturing the cable reel.

A one-piece reel arrangement formed of a substantially quadrangle planar sheet is disclosed. The arrangement comprises longitudinal fold lines (A), transverse fold lines (B) and secondary transverse fold lines (E) neighboring to each of said transverse fold lines (B). Said fold lines (A, B, E) are formed by means of weakening the planar sheet material with perforations, incisions or semi-cut lines; wherein aforementioned fold lines (A, B, E) together form periodically repeating fragments along the longitudinal direction of the sheet. These fragments are adapted to be harmonically folded so that both longitudinal ends (4) are overlapped and attached to each other, and that reel body (3) and support legs (1) are formed by such folding.
