A valve assembly capable of converting a small leak of a device into a measurable, relatively larger or "burst" flow event is described. In certain embodiments, the valve assembly includes a compliant chamber and, following pressurization of the device, permits flow when the pressure in the compliant chamber drops to a configured fill pressure and restricts (or prevents) flow when the pressure in the compliant chamber increases to a shut-off pressure. The disclosed valve assemblies may be incorporated into a leak detection assembly capable of transmitting usage and/or alarm data to a central service.

An ultrasonic flow meter is shown in situ inside a flow control valve assembly (100) situated between a shut-off valve member (113) and an outlet (109). The flow measuring portion (101) has a straight conduit of constant internal diameter with two piezoelectric ultrasonic transducers (103) at or close to either end of this straight conduit. To minimise turbulence from operation of the valve members (113), (115), the flow meter (101) has a step down portion from its inlet so that the internal diameter of the flow meter is reduced in two stages via tapering and cylindrical portions until the diameter is that of the measuring portion. At its outlet the same arrangement is reversed so that the internal diameter is increased in stages until it is again equal to the original inlet diameter at its outlet.

The present disclosure relates generally to data communication in subsea oil and gas drilling and production operations. In particular, data communication from sensors located on a piece of subsea oil and gas drilling and/or production equipment to a remote location, such as to a demodulation system, is disclosed. The data communication system can include sensors for measuring various characteristics of the subsea equipment, for coding the measured data into a signal, for transmitting the signal, and for ultimately decoding the signal. The signal is transmitted along the structures which provide the containment for existing hydraulic fluid lines associated with the subsea equipment by a variety of methods, such as by pulse position modulation and/or reverse time pulse position modulation. The communication system can further include a local power generator assembly to power associated sensors and transmitters.
