    Abstract: A stemming device (10) for use with a charge (44) containing a gas producing material in a borehole (46) is provided. The stemming device (10) has a piston (14) movable from a rest position to an operative position relative to a complementary static member (12) to cause radial expansion of the stemming device (10). The piston (14) has a leading end (36) which operatively faces the charge (44) in the borehole (46) and provides a sliding fit within the borehole (46) and which is configured to move under action from the charge (44) or gas produced by the charge (44). The device (10) is further configured to accommodate an actuating tube or cable (20) extending from the charge (44) externally of the borehole (46) and the static member (12) includes formations (24) to engage the sides of the borehole (46).

    Abstract: Cartridge (10) includes first compartment (12) for holding a volume of energy absorbing stemming material (14) and adjacent second compartment (16) for holding a volume of energetic explosive or propellant material (18). Initiator (28) is disposed in compartment (16). Dividing wall (22) separates compartments (12, 16) and may be conical in shape so as to deform and seal the borehole upon detonation of material (18). Cartridge (10) may be integrally formed or assembled from two separate containers coupled together. Compartment (12) can be made from thin-walled material including one or more slits or lines of weakness to facilitate deformation or bursting. Cartridge (10) can be secured to a stemming bar for placement in the borehole. Charging systems and methods of charging a hole formed in hard material are also described and claimed.

    Abstract: The present invention is directed towards an apparatus for providing a nonlabor-intensive process for sealing an opening formed in the ground with a chemically-inflatable bag. The chemically-inflatable bag contains two or more chemical reactants, one of which is a liquid reactant that is initially stored in a liquid-containing device. The liquid-containing device has a removable cap, which upon removal or breakage of the cap permits the liquid reacting agent to contact and react with another reacting agent. The chemical reaction produces carbon dioxide, which expands the chemically-inflatable bag from a collapsed condition to an inflated condition. In the inflated condition, the chemically-inflatable bag fills and protects the integrity of the formed cavity.

    Abstract: A process for manufacturing a perforation gun casing includes providing a perforation gun housing that has a wall of nominal thickness and at least one scallop. Each scallop is a portion of the wall having a reduced thickness relative to the nominal wall thickness. The process also includes applying a selective annealing process to the perforation gun casing. The selective annealing process affects the material properties of the scallop but generally does not substantially affect the material properties of the portions of the wall having a nominal thickness.

    Abstract: A cartridge (10) is provided having a tubular body (12) made from a plastics material which is filled with a gas producing material (36).     Abstract: The use of elongated booster or booster charges for initiating bulk explosives in boreholes provides advantages relative to conventional booster charges. Such booster charges are generally cylindrical in configuration and charges in accordance with this invention typically have a length-to-diameter ratio of at least 4:1, preferably greater than 4:1. In addition, the diameter of the booster charge is significantly less than the diameter of the borehole in which it is used, so that a significant amount of bulk explosive occupies the region in the borehole between the booster charge and the interior surface of the borehole. A vented stabilizer (14) is provided for combination with the booster in order to retain the booster centrally within the borehole. The stabilizer is preferably vented so that bulk explosive can flow through or past the booster and stabilizer assembly, and so that the assembly can be moved through the bulk explosive after the hole is filled.

    Abstract: A composite drill gun for use in a wellbore environment can include a detonation housing containing a detonation source, a composite carrier containing one or more encapsulated charges, and a detonation train connecting the detonation source to the encapsulated charges. The detonation source and each individual encapsulated charge are all sealed with respect to the wellbore environment, and thus the carrier need not be sealed with respect to the wellbore environment. The carrier can be made out of composite materials without worry of leaks into the interior of the carrier, as the detonation source and encapsulated charges are all sealed with respect to the wellbore environment. The composite carrier can be easily drilled out of the wellbore after detonation.
