Displays (100) including switchable backlight (110, 200) and front surface films (120) are disclosed. Displays with switchable backlights (110) that use a front surface film (120) to reduce the visibility of a display outside an intended viewing area (112, 226) in ambient light are also disclosed. The switchable backlight (110, 200) has two different output modes with different viewing cones (112, 114; 226, 236) to limit visibility to different angular ranges.

A light duct elbow having two light conduits capable of transporting light along two different propagation directions. A light diverter is located between the light conduits and has a reflector for directing light along the light conduits. In the light duct elbow, a light ray propagating within a collimation angle in the first light conduit that intersects the reflector is diverted to a second light ray propagating within the collimation angle in the second light conduit.

An indicator light is disclosed herein. The indicator light can include a housing having at least one wall, where the at least one wall forms a cavity, and where the housing has a first length. The indicator light can also include a light guide disposed within the housing at a distal end of the housing, where the light guide has a second length that is less than the first length. The indicator light can further include a light source disposed adjacent to the light guide. The housing and the light guide can form a flame path therebetween.

A light engine having an array of light horns. Each light horn has a narrow end, an open wide end, and side walls extending from the narrow end to the wide end with the side walls shaped as truncated pyramids. One or more LEDs are located at the narrow end of each of the light horns with each of the light horns providing substantially collimated light from the LEDs at the wide end.

A light assembly (100) is provided that includes a housing (102), a light pipe assembly (104), and a conforming seal (106). The housing has a cavity (208) extending through the housing between first and second ends (204, 206) of the housing. The housing holds a light source (202) that is configured to emit light within the cavity. The light pipe assembly has an attachment end (220) disposed at the first end of the housing. The light emitted by the light source is received by the light pipe assembly at the attachment end and is transmitted through the light pipe assembly. The conforming seal has a tubular shape that at least partially surrounds the housing and the light pipe assembly. A first segment (230) of the conforming seal extends along the light pipe assembly and conforms to the light pipe assembly. A second segment (232) of the conforming seal extends along the housing and conforms to the housing.

Es wird ein länglicher hohler Lichtleiter (1) beschrieben, wie er insbesondere in einem Photobioreaktor dazu eingesetzt werden kann, phototrophe Organismen sowohl mit Licht als auch mit Nährstoffen zu versorgen. Der Lichtleiter (1) weist einen Mantel (3) aus transparentem Material auf, der einen hohlen Kern (5) umgibt. Der hohle Kern weist einen Durchmesser von wenigstens 1 mm, vorzugsweise wenigstens 3mm oder 1 cm, auf. In dem Mantel (3) ist eine Vielzahl von Öffnungen (7) mit einem Durchmesser von wenigstens 0,5 mm, vorzugsweise wenigstens 1 mm, ausgebildet. Durch den transparenten Mantel kann Licht propagieren und vorzugsweise entlang des gesamten Lichtleiters (1) seitlich (19) austreten. Durch den hohlen Kern (5) können Nährstoffe (15) ins Innere des Photobioreaktors geleitet werden. Umgekehrt können durch den hohlen Kern (5) auch Teile der mit Organismen versetzten Lösung abgesaugt werden, beispielsweise um diese zu analysieren.

An illumination device includes light-emitting elements (LEEs); a light guide extending in a forward direction from a first end to a second end, the light guide being positioned to receive at the first end light emitted by the LEEs and to guide the received light to the second end; and an optical extractor coupled to the second end to receive the guided light. The optical extractor is formed from a transparent, solid material and includes a first output surface including a transmissive portion arranged and shaped to transmit a first portion of the guided light to the ambient in a forward angular range and a reflective portion arranged and shaped to reflect via TIR all the guided light incident on the reflective portion; and a second output surface arranged to transmit, to the ambient in a backward angular range, light reflected by the reflective portion of the first output surface.
