Various techniques are provided for implementing a hybrid electrical-optical interface. In one example, the hybrid electrical-optical interface includes a connector body configured to mate with an universal serial bus (USB) component in accordance with a predetermined mechanical misalignment tolerance, a plurality of electrical conduits disposed within the connector body and configured to pass electrical signals, and an optical conduit disposed within the connector body between at least two of the electrical conduits, wherein the optical conduit is configured to pass optical signals through a free space gap formed while the connector body is mated with the USB component, and configured to maintain communication of the optical signals through the free space gap while the connector body and the USB component are within the misalignment tolerance. A fiber optical connector microlens is provided with a self- aligning optical fiber cavity. The microlens includes a convex first lens surface and a second lens surface. A fiber alignment cavity is integrally formed with the second lens surface to accept an optical fiber core. A lens body is interposed between the first and second lens surfaces, having a cross-sectional area with a lens center axis, and the fiber alignment cavity is aligned with the lens center axis. In a first aspect, the fiber alignment cavity penetrates the lens second surface. In a second aspect, an integrally formed cradle with a cradle surface extends from the lens second surface, and a channel is formed in the cradle surface, with a center axis aligned with the lens center axis. The fiber alignment cavity includes a bridge covering a portion of the channel.

An optical probe for emitting and/or receiving light within a body comprises an optical fiber that transmits and/or receives an optical signal, a silicon optical bench including a fiber groove running longitudinally that holds an optical fiber termination of the optical fiber and a reflecting surface that optically couples an endface of the optical fiber termination to a lateral side of the optical bench. The fiber groove is fabricated using silicon anisotropic etching techniques. Some examples use a housing around the optical bench that is fabricated using LIGA or other electroforming technology. A method for forming lens structure is also described that comprises forming a refractive lens in a first layer of a composite wafer material, such as SOI (silicon on insulator) wafers and forming an optical port through a backside of the composite wafer material along an optical axis of the refractive lens.
