Interactive systems and methods for creating game and game-like applications, including a direct challenge application for building a head-to-head challenge between users, are presented. A system for building and managing a plurality of direct challenges includes an application services interface, a plurality of user interfaces, a challenge application, and a plurality of external data services for tracking the progress and player performance during real- world events, such as sporting events.

Disclosed is a computer-implemented method of (and system for) operating instances of a game having a plurality of game positions that can be occupied by players, such as a poker-type game. The method comprises assigning a player a plurality of weights relating to game positions, where each weight indicates a bias towards placement of the player at a game position. When a player has played in a first game at a given position, the weights are updated to indicate an altered bias towards placement at each position. The player is then assigned to a second game based on the updated weights.

Systems and methods for providing a gambling hybrid game with an accumulated trigger and deferred gambling are disclosed. The gambling hybrid game monitors an accumulation of an activating element during play of an entertainment game and activates a gambling game in a manner dependent upon the amount of the activating element accumulated during the play of the entertainment game. The gambling game may occur only after a sufficient amount of the activating element has been accumulated and/or at a particular point in game play of the entertainment game. Awards of a game currency and/or real credits based on the results of gambling events in the gambling game may also be determined by the accumulation of the activating element.

An exemplary apparatus comprises: a computing device with instructions to: offer a wagering opportunity defined by odds for each of at least two outcomes of an event, in which the particular odds are held constant; receive a plurality of first wager requests for wagers based on a first outcome; receive a plurality of second wager requests for wagers based on a second outcome, in which wagers related to the first outcome offset a risk associated with wagers related to the second outcome; and determine a portion of a first wager request and a portion of a second wager request to accept based on a cumulative risk of accepting both the first portion and the second portion.

A method of awarding a progressive comprises displaying a progressive award which increments over time as wagers are received and activating the progressive award for a predetermined first time period. During the first time period, a first portion of each eligible wager received is added to the progressive award, each eligible wager associated with a corresponding player inputting the wager. For each eligible wager received, a first number of entries are allocated into a selection for awarding the progressive award. The method further comprises selecting a winning entry from all entries received during the first time period and awarding the progressive award to a player associated with the selected winning entry.

Techniques for handling wager residuals are described herein. Embodiments include a method that detects a residual from one or more wagers remaining in a first memory location for an electronic wagering game machine. The residual of the one or more wagers are transferred from the first memory location to a second memory location. Information about the residual is stored. The residual from the first memory location is cleared.
