A method and apparatus are provided for sending messages such as video or voice mail messages in a telecommunications system. A recipient message number is allocated to a subscriber to the system for each recipient to whom the subscriber wishes to send messages. This allocated recipient number is then stored with an associated recipient number. The subscriber makes a call to the recipient message number and a message is recorded in the call. A recipient pick-up number is then allocated to the recorded message and the recorded message is stored. A separate message including the recipient pick-up number is then sent to the recipient and he is able to dial the recipient pick-up number to retrieve the stored message.

The invention relates to telephony and makes it possible to call a subscriber without information on a phone number and location thereof, to provide a high degree of individual freedom to select and limit incoming calls, to differentiate a payment for using communication facilities and for calling. First, a called (in another version - a calling) subscriber provides a message relating to the person of the called subscriber and sends it to a telephone network. Said message and a number of a terminating unit from where the message has come are recorded by the telephone network. Afterwards, the calling (in another version - the called) subscriber composes an information message relating to the person of the called subscriber and sends it to a telephone network. The telephone network compares the received message with the previously recorded message and, in the case of a positive result, identifies the numbers of the corresponding terminating units and connects the subscribers. Two independent and 14 dependent versions of the invention are also disclosed.

The network picks up the call before it 'fails' (e.g. hits a busy tone, rings out, phone is off, phone cannot connect); this can be before or upon or shortly after the network decides to terminate ringtone or to not offer any ringtone. The network then plays back an IVR recording giving the option of speaking a text (SMS, MMS, email, IM etc) to the person they were trying to call. So the caller always gets through to something useful and which may also be seen as les formal than ordinary voicemail, and hence more likely to be used.

The invention relates to telephony and is directed at cutting cost and improving telecommunication services for message transfers. A message and a phone number of a subscriber to which the message is addressed are received and recorded by a telephone network. The communication channel with a transmitting subscriber is interrupted and the message transfer is deferred for a certain period of time. Afterwards, said information is transferred to another branch of the telephone network which connects a receiving subscriber and reproduce the message thereto. In the case of the second version, the message transfer is performed at the time fixed by the transmitting subscriber. At the time of the message transmission, the subscriber is informed of the cost of the service. In the third version, the message is reproduced with a delay but without a preliminary transfer to another branch of the telephone network. In the fourth version the message is transferred with delay but by means of the communication channel between two intermediate terminating units of the telephone network. In the fifth version, the message is reproduced on demand and according to the access code received from the receiving subscriber. Five independent and three dependent versions of the invention are also disclosed.
