Abstract:
A system for enabling nodes of a client-server network to interact with broadcast program content, the system includes a server node that can detect the presence on the network of one or more client nodes; a trigger extractor that can extract program-synchronous triggers from within the content of a broadcast program; and an application manager that, in response to extraction of a program-synchronous trigger from a broadcast program, can facilitate interactive communication, relating to the broadcast program content, between the server node and one or more client nodes whose presence on the network has been detected.
Abstract:
Systems and methods are disclosed for qualifying performance of a disk drive in a digital home communications terminal (DHCT) deployed in the field. In embodiment, among others, at least one DHCT is identified for performance testing. A disk drive performance test application is downloaded to the DHCT over a communication channel. Performance test results are received from the DHCT over the communication channel. A DHCT is designated as having a hard disk failure if the test results are below a threshold.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for presenting an event during a broadcast. Real time media broadcast content can be transmitted or received using a real time protocol via a transceiver. The real time media broadcast content can be output to a user. At least one presentation content message including content for presentation to a user can be transmitted or received. After transmitting or receiving the presentation content message an event trigger can be transmitted or received, the event trigger configured to trigger presentation of the content of the presentation content message in coordination with the real time media broadcast content. Content of the presentation content message can be presented to a user in response to receiving the event trigger.
Abstract:
A set-top box (STB) is disclosed. The STB includes a network interface to send signals to and receive signals from a network. The STB also includes a tuner to send a display signal to a display device based on a signal received by the STB. The STB also includes a user interface display module to send a user interface display to the display device and to receive user input. The STB also includes a diagnostic module to generate a network diagnostic command and to send the network diagnostic command to a first network device. The network diagnostic command is configured to solicit a response from the first network device. The diagnostic module is configured to determine a status of a network connection from the STB to a remote network device based on the network diagnostic command and the response received from the first network device.

Abstract:
An apparatus for controlling fraud in a satellite signal delivery system. An apparatus in accordance with the present invention comprises a receive antenna for receiving at least one satellite signal, and a module, coupled to the receive antenna, for selectively delivering the at least one satellite signal to at least one receiver via an output of the module, wherein the module creates an association between the module and the at least one receiver upon installation of the at least one receiver to the output, such that the module delivers the at least one satellite signal to the at least one receiver only when the association is present.
Abstract:
Methods and apparatus for delivering content over network infrastructure are disclosed. In one embodiment, the network comprises a content-based (e.g., cable) network coupled to a radio or other service provider network, and a portion of the infrastructure comprises that nominally used for on-demand (OD) services such as VOD. Mobile or other consumer devices (e.g., cellular telephones, PDAs, etc.) capable of accessing the service provider network are able to access the on-demand and related "trick mode" functionality of the content-based network, as well as make use of ancillary functions such as billing modules associated with the content network.
Abstract:
A system for displaying a graphical indication of a proximately located device is disclosed. When a mobile terminal (e.g., a mobile telephone) equipped with short-range communications (e.g., Bluetooth or wi-fï) as well as conventional long-range communications capabilities comes within range of set top box (e.g., a digital broadcast receiver), the set top box (STB) overlays an icon over the broadcast screen image indicating that a mobile terminal is present that can be used as a back channel to the cable operator. The overlaid icon may be presented in differing colors to indicate various characteristics of the mobile terminal, e.g., a type of the mobile terminal (phone vs. PDA) or a capability of the mobile terminal (e.g., ability to establish a GPRS or other data connection). A user of the STB can then use interactive services offered by the cable operator, and deliver interactive selections and commands to the cable operator via the mobile terminal back channel.
Abstract:
A hybrid method for a service provider (10) to transmit decryption information (e.g., algorithms, parameter, keys) to clients (12) in a secure manner and at low cost for use in decrypting broadcast services. The service provider (10) uses a bi-directional channel (14) (e.g., a GPRS channel) to receive service requests, authenticate clients and transmit currently valid decryption information (and, optionally, future decryption information) necessary to decrypt a broadcast service. The service provider (10) transmits the encrypted service on a unidirectional channel (16) (e.g., a DVB-T channel). The service provider (10) preferably also changes the encryption of the service with time, and, as it does, transmits updated decryption information to its clients (12) on the unidirectional channel (16). The updated decryption information is encrypted using the currently valid decryption information and may also include future decryption information and synchronization information.
Abstract:
A pay-per-view program access control system which combines a television signal (52) with a telephone control signal (58) to allow a remotely located telephone connection to be coupled to a television receiver via a single wire or transmission line (59). The television signal is combined with the telephone control signal and the combined signals are then separated at a remote location by a splitter (66). Once separated, the television signal (202) and telephone control signal (206) can be used as if they had been transmitted to the remote location separately. The single transmission line also carries one or more pilot tones with or without modulated data to select one of a plurality of transmission signals to couple to the television receiver via a multisswitch.
