Abstract: Vom natürlichen Sprunggelenk des Menschen ist durch mathematische Berechnungen und geometrische Messungen wissenschaftlich gesichert, dass ein sogenanntes instantes Rotationszentrum mit annähernd punktförmiger Ausbildung vorliegt. Das obere Sprunggelenk selbst gewährt einen polyaxialen, aber beschränkten Bewegungsumfang. Beim fortgeschrittenen Verschleiß (Arthrose) des oberen Sprunggelenkes wird eine Endoprothese benötigt, die ebenso polyaxial wie das natürliche Sprunggelenk funktioniert und diese Kräfte drehmomentfrei durch das Sprunggelenk überträgt. Die kugelsegmentförmige talare Endoprothese des oberen Sprunggelenkes realisiert ein drehmomentfreies Rotationszentrum, lässt sich deckungsgleich mit dem natürlichen Rotationszentrum implantieren und erlaubt die polyaxialen Bewegungen des natürlichen Sprunggelenkes. Durch seitliche Segmentzuschnitte hält die Prothese bei jeder Bewegung Kontakt zur verbliebenen ossären Sprunggelenk-Gabel und besitzt dadurch eine Eigenstabilität. Diese reduziert den möglichen Bewegungsumfang einer Kugelform auf den physiologischen Bewegungsumfang.

Abstract: A humeral implant is provided. The implant includes a humeral stem (5300) including a plurality of fins (5350). At least one fin comprises a serrated bottom edge (5351, 5352). A radial distance between an inner bottom edge of the at least one fin and a centerline (C) of the humeral implant increases along a distal length of extension of the at least one fin. At least the serrated bottom edge of the at least one fin is configured to cut into and compact bone of of the metaphysis of a humerus toward relatively denser cancellous bone of a peripheral portion of the humerus when press-fit therein, thereby providing sufficient press-fitting for cementless fixation of the humeral stem into the humerus. Related kits and methods are also provided.

Abstract: A method for manufacturing a prosthetic component (10, 100, 200) include injection molding a prosthetic component with a polymeric material. The prosthetic component includes a final surface positioned on one side and multiple coring features (32, 138, 222) positioned on an opposite side. The coring features may include multiple ribs (34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 140, 224 ) and slots (44, 46, 48, 50, 142, 226). The method further includes machining the prosthetic component to remove the coring features and form a final surface on the opposite side. The prosthetic component may be a femoral component for a prosthetic knee joint.

Abstract: Unicompartmental tibial components are described herein. A first unicompartmental component (10) comprises a plate (12) having a bearing surface (18) and an opposing surface (22) that is configured to be secured to a proximal end of a patient's tibia, wherein the plate further comprises an anterior end (24), an outer side (25), a posterior end (26) and an inner side (27), wherein a mediolateral width W of the plate is defined between the outer and inner sides, and a longitudinal anteroposterior axis (28) extends between the anterior and posterior ends approximately one third of the width of the plate (i.e. 1/3W) from the lateral side, and defines a longitudinal axis length L of the plate. A first elongate peg (14) protrudes from the opposing surface in the anterior portion, the first elongate peg defining a first peg axis (32). A second elongate peg (16) protrudes from the opposing surface in the anterior portion, the second elongate peg defining a second peg axis (34). The first and second peg axes are disposed at an angle of 45-70 degrees with respect to the longitudinal anteroposterior axis and are substantially parallel to one another such that the first and second pegs protrude posteriorly as well as distally with respect to the plate. An anterior portion of the plate comprises a part of the plate defined by an anterior 60% or less of the longitudinal axis length L, whilst a posterior portion of the plate comprises a part of the plate that is defined by the remaining posterior 40% or more of the longitudinal axis length L. The posterior portion of the opposing surface is free from pegs or other fixation devices, and the first and second elongate pegs are located more than half of the mediolateral width W of the plate from an outer edge of the plate. The component is configured for cementless fixation using an interference fit. Also described is a method of installation and a tool suitable for use in installation.

The biodegradable polymer particles may include bone growth promoting agents that are released as the particles degrade over time.

Abstract: A system for monitoring bone ingrowth includes an orthopaedic prosthesis (202) having a circuit configured to transmit force sensor data indicative of an amount of force applied to a stem (204) of the orthopaedic prosthesis in response to receiving power from an external power supply. The force sensor data is indicative of bone ingrowth of the orthopaedic prosthesis. As such, an orthopaedic surgeon may monitored the force sensor data over time to ensure bone ingrowth of the orthopaedic prosthesis has sufficiently occurred.
