    Abstract: Disclosed is an aqueous cementing slurry composition and a method of use thereof for cementing a pipe or casing in a borehole of a well using an aqueous cementing slurry composition comprising (a) a hydraulic cement, (b) a methylhydroxyethyl cellulose (HEMC) having an ethylene oxide molar substitution (EO MS) of from 0.16 to 0.22 and a methyl degree of substitution (M DS) of from 1.35 to 1.45, (c) water, and optionally (d) one or more other additives conventionally added to aqueous cementing compositions useful in cementing casings in the borehole of wells. Preferably, the aqueous cementing slurry composition is pumped downwardly into said casing, pumped upwardly into the annulus surrounding said casing until said aqueous composition fills that portion of the annular space desired to be sealed, and then maintaining said aqueous cementing composition in place until the cement sets.

    Abstract: A method of servicing a wellbore that penetrates a subterranean formation includes displacing a cement composition comprising an aromatic sulfonated polymer into the wellbore and allowing the cement composition to set. In an embodiment, a transition time of the cement composition is less than or equal to about 60 minutes, alternatively less than or equal to about 50 minutes, less than or equal to about 40 minutes, less than or equal to about 30 minutes, less than or equal to about 20 minutes, or less than or equal to about 10 minutes. Thus, the transition time may be short enough to inhibit a substantial amount of gas migration into the cement composition before it sets. In yet another embodiment, the cement composition exhibits a viscosity that increases from a value of 35 Bc (Bearden units) to about 100 Bc in about 10 minutes or less when the cement composition sets.

    Abstract: Rapid setting plugging compositions comprising oil, clay, magnesium chloride, and magnesium oxide powder are provided for sealing permeable zones in subterranean formations. The invention also relates to methods for using said compositions. The permeable zones may be sealed by passing the plugging composition and water to the subterranean formation. While being exposed to downhole temperatures in a range of from about 0°F to about 500°F, the plugging composition quickly thickens to form a sealing mass that is substantially impermeable to fluid in less than about 1 minute after contacting the water. It then usually develops an effective amount of compressive strength to prevent it from being washed away within a period ranging from about 5 minutes to about 2 hours at temperatures ranging from about 0°F to about 500°F.
