Abstract: A buckling loop rotary motor having a stator and an activatable buckling loop that may also act as a rotor, is disclosed. The buckling loop is made as a springy, band or ribbon. An applied force actuates a portion of the buckling loop, causing a localized change of curvature. The buckling loop responds by changing shape to minimize energy, causing rotation of the rotor. In a bi-metallic embodiment, the thermally actuated active band expands more than the base band, effecting a localized change of curvature that drives the rotor. Thermal activation is by heating or cooling, or a combination thereof. In an electroactive polymer (EAP) embodiment, the active acrylic or silicone EAP is actuated electrically. The change in thickness, and therefore, length, of the active EAP relative to the inactive, base material causes a local change of curvature of the loop that drives rotation of the motor.

Abstract: Provided herein are rotary valve assemblies, engines, and corresponding methods. A rotary valve assembly may include a valve housing defining a cylindrical bore, an inlet, and an outlet. The valve assembly may further include an intake assembly and a throttle assembly arranged concentrically within the cylindrical bore of the valve housing, and the intake assembly and the throttle assembly may rotate independently of one another with respect to a longitudinal axis. During operation of the rotary valve assembly, the valve housing may permit fluid to enter the cylindrical bore of the valve housing via the inlet, the intake assembly may rotate to permit the fluid to flow through the at least one intake inlet port and the at least one throttle inlet port into the throttle body, and the intake assembly may permit the fluid to flow to the outlet from the throttle body.

Abstract: An internal combustion engine of the two- or four-stroke petrol, diesel or gas-fueled type, comprising: an engine block (11) which forms internally at least one cylinder (12); a head (13) which contains a cylindrical rotary distributor (14) which is adapted to connect, by means of two internal ports (15a, 15b), a combustion chamber (16) of the at least one cylinder (12) alternately to the air intake and to the gas exhaust; a plate (21) for closing the head (13) in an upper region, in which the intake and exhaust conveyance channels (22, 23) of the engine are provided. The cradle (27) is adapted to adhere against the rotary distributor (14) during the compression and combustion steps of the combustible fluid. The sealing element (25) has a port (26) for connection between the combustion chamber (16) and the two internal ports (15a, 15b) of the rotary distributor (14) which is formed through the cradle (27). The upper closure plate (21) of the head (13) has a portion (39), which is inserted between the walls of the head (13), which faces and is substantially shaped complementarily with respect to the rotary distributor (14). Abstract: Rotary valve system for controlling communication with a port in an internal combustion engine which, in one disclosed embodiment, has a crankshaft, compression and expansion pistons connected to the crankshaft for reciprocating movement within compression and expansion chambers, a combustion chamber in which air from the compression chamber is combined with fuel and burned to produce an increased gas volume.
