摘要: An ion mass filter for use in a mass spectrometer is disclosed, which includes a plurality of rods arranged in a multipole configuration to provide a passageway through which ions can travel, said plurality of rods being configured for application of RF voltages thereto to generate an electromagnetic field within the passageway for providing radial confinement of the ions and further configured for application of a DC voltage thereto, and at least two pairs of auxiliary electrodes interspersed between the plurality of multipole rods, where one pair forms a first pole of the auxiliary electrodes and the other pair forms a second pole of the auxiliary electrodes. A controller can provide one or more control signals to the DC voltage source so as to switch the polarity of the DC voltage differential between the two poles according to a predefined criterion.

摘要: In one aspect, a method of performing mass spectrometry is disclosed, which comprises ionizing a sample to generate a plurality of precursor ions, passing the precursor ions through a mass filter to select at least one subset of the ions, introducing the selected ions into a branched radiofrequency (RF) ion trap and subjecting at least a portion of said selected precursor ions to fragmentation within the ion trap so as to generate a first plurality of fragment ions. The method can further include isolating at least a portion of the first plurality of fragment ions in at least one branch of the branched RF ion trap, removing unwanted fragment ions, releasing the remaining ions from said at least one branch and subjecting at least a portion thereof to fragmentation so as to generate a second plurality of fragment ions. Any combination of collision induced dissociation (CID) and electron activation dissociation (EAD) can be employed for fragmenting the ions.

摘要: An apparatus for ion manipulation having improved duty cycle includes first and second separation regions separated by a switch that alternates between guiding ions to each of the separation regions. The separation regions separate the ions based on mobility over respective time periods that at least partially overlap. The apparatus can additionally or alternatively include a pre-separation region that filters ions prior to accumulating ions, thus allowing an accumulation region to accumulate for a longer time period. The apparatus can additionally or alternatively include a plurality of gates along the separation region(s) to simultaneously filter a plurality of ion packets sequentially released into the separation region(s). Methods for ion manipulation having improved duty cycle involve separating ions on two separation regions over first and second time periods that at least partially overlap, pre-filtering ions prior to accumulation and separation, and/or simultaneously filtering a plurality of ions packets are also provided.
