In a gas laser (1) with incorporated mirrors (2, 3), two longitudinal modes of the laser oscillation whose planes of polarization are mutually perpendicular are excited during operation. The angular position of the planes of polarization is stabilized by means of an optically birefringent element (5) arranged in the optical path in the optical resonator (2,3).

A laser comprises a pump laser (202, 204, 206) for generating a pump laser beam, and a main laser (208, 210) for generating a main laser beam and arranged to be pumped by the pump laser beam. Various measures are adopted to enable the initiation and maintenance of self-mode-locking of the main laser beam even at low threshold pump laser powers. A device for initiating mode-locking of the main laser beam is also disclosed.

A regenerative laser amplifier comprises a gain medium (100) and source of pump energy (501-504) coupled with the gain medium (100); a Pockels cell (103), which rotates an incident beam in response to application of a control signal; an optical relay system defining a first relay plane near the gain medium (100) and a second relay plane near the rotator (103); and a plurality of reflectors (111-117) configured to define an optical path through the gain medium (100), optical relay (101-102) and Pockels cell (103). An input coupler and an output coupler are provided, implemented by a single polarizer (106). A control circuit (135) coupled to the Pockels cell (103).

A multimode imaging component provided with a rectangular waveguide (14') having two ends (15, 19) is described. To avoid unwanted reflections of radiation in the waveguide, the surfaces (17, 21) between the windows (16, 18, 20, 22) at the ends are provided with means for reducing reflection, for example, anti-reflection coatings (24, 25). When such a multimode imaging component is used as a coupler in a ring laser, the radiation spectrum of the ring laser will not comprise unwanted spectral components.

A wavelength locked pulsed dye laser system. The system includes a low-power continuous wave He-Ne laser (11) disposed to inject continuous wave, single wavelength, laser light emitted therefrom into the optical cavity (12) of a pulsed dye laser whereby the wavelength of pulsed laser light emitted from the dye laser is locked at the single wavelength (632.8nm) of the He-Ne laser light. Transverse pump beam B1 is from a copper vapour laser (13) and is line-focussed by cylindrical lens L1 onto dye cell D1.

An optical pulse generator comprises a FM mode locked laser that is configured to produce dark optical pulses. The laser comprises a cavity (M1, M2) and a Pr doped fluoride fibre (3) pumped by a source (1). The output is mode locked by a phase modulator comprising a silica fibre (2) in the cavity that receives modulating pulses from a DFB laser (7), so as to alter the refractive index of the fibre (2) and cross phase modulate the laser light. The phase modulation combines with the dispersive effect of the fibre (3) to produce dark output pulses.

A laser resonant cavity (10) defined by a set of reflective end elements (26) positioned to together form a closed optical path, a gain medium (12) positioned along the closed optical path, means (14) for exciting the gain medium to produce a laser beam within the cavity, at least one focusing element (24) positioned within the cavity in optical alignement with the gain medium, and a prism (26) positioned as one of the end elements of the cavity and providing angular dispersion of the laser beam. The prism, end elements, gain medium, and focusing elements are positioned with respect to each other such that the resonant cavity supports a coexistence of several monochromatic laser modes, each mode having a distinct propagation axis. Propagation axes of modes having relatively longer wavelengths traverse more of the prism than propagation axes of modes having relatively shorter wavelengths, resulting in the addition of a negative component to the group velocity dispersion of the laser cavity. The invention provides group velocity dispersion compensation using one or more prismatic end elements without the need for any additional intracavity elements whose sole purpose is dispersion compensation.

Filtered regenerative feedback is used to modulate a laser or other source of electromagnetic radiation to generate optical pulses whose amplitudes and repetition rates are continuously tunable. The technique involves converting, by means of a photodetector (9), a portion of the radiation produced by a modulatable electromagnetic radiation source (1, 7) into a control signal, filtering the control signal through a bandpass filter (3, 10), and modulating the modulatable radiation source with the filtered control signal to produce pulses. This technique is in principle applicable to any source of electromagnetic radiation and is especially effective for semiconductor diode lasers.

The invention concerns a method of operating a laser diode (2) producing a beam (9) whose intensity is controlled by a control signal and which is directed along a first beam path (10) at the target surface (5), stray reflections from the target surface (5) which are unstable with respect to the diode (2) in time and/or space acting on the diode (2). An element (19, 28, 31, 37, 38) which is stable in time and with respect to the diode (2) in space is used to feed part of the light emitted by the diode back along a second beam path (11) to the active zone (42) of the diode (2) so that the diode (2) is kept in a state of coherence collapse.

An optical pulse sequence is generated by applying a repetitive optical signal to an optical modulator connected in the laser cavity of a mode-locked laser. The pulse sequence in the laser cavity is then ouput. The repeat period of the repetitive optical signal is set to be equal to, or an integer multiple of, the cavity round-trip time. The laser is thereby driven to output pulses in bit positions corresponding to the non-zero pulses of the input repetitive optical signal. In one example, the output pulse sequence is used to control an optical switch to provide an OTDM programmable multiplexer using optical signals.
