To avoid unwanted reflections of radiation in the waveguide, the surfaces (17, 21) between the windows (16, 18, 20, 22) at the ends are provided with means for reducing reflection, for example, anti-reflection coatings (24, 25).     摘要: An optical pulse generator comprises a FM mode locked laser that is configured to produce dark optical pulses. The laser comprises a cavity (M1, M2) and a Pr doped fluoride fibre (3) pumped by a source (1). The output is mode locked by a phase modulator comprising a silica fibre (2) in the cavity that receives modulating pulses from a DFB laser (7), so as to alter the refractive index of the fibre (2) and cross phase modulate the laser light. The phase modulation combines with the dispersive effect of the fibre (3) to produce dark output pulses.

    摘要: A laser resonant cavity (10) defined by a set of reflective end elements (26) positioned to together form a closed optical path, a gain medium (12) positioned along the closed optical path, means (14) for exciting the gain medium to produce a laser beam within the cavity, at least one focusing element (24) positioned within the cavity in optical alignement with the gain medium, and a prism (26) positioned as one of the end elements of the cavity and providing angular dispersion of the laser beam. The prism, end elements, gain medium, and focusing elements are positioned with respect to each other such that the resonant cavity supports a coexistence of several monochromatic laser modes, each mode having a distinct propagation axis. Propagation axes of modes having relatively longer wavelengths traverse more of the prism than propagation axes of modes having relatively shorter wavelengths, resulting in the addition of a negative component to the group velocity dispersion of the laser cavity. The invention provides group velocity dispersion compensation using one or more prismatic end elements without the need for any additional intracavity elements whose sole purpose is dispersion compensation.

    摘要: Filtered regenerative feedback is used to modulate a laser or other source of electromagnetic radiation to generate optical pulses whose amplitudes and repetition rates are continuously tunable. The technique involves converting, by means of a photodetector (9), a portion of the radiation produced by a modulatable electromagnetic radiation source (1, 7) into a control signal, filtering the control signal through a bandpass filter (3, 10), and modulating the modulatable radiation source with the filtered control signal to produce pulses. This technique is in principle applicable to any source of electromagnetic radiation and is especially effective for semiconductor diode lasers.
