Described are resin compositions containing a saponified product of a modified ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer containing 0.1 to 10 mole percent of pyrrolidone ring containing units and shaped articles prepared from this composition, especially a multilayered structure formed by a high speed thermal drawing, having excellent uniform gas barrier properties without pinholes, cracks and localized uneven stretching.

A resinous composition which comprises (A) 95 to 50 parts by weight of a saponified product of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer and (B) 5 to 50 parts by weight of a product formed by modifying an ethylene-vinyl carboxylate ester copolymer or an ethylene-acrylate ester copolymer with an a,p-unsaturated carboxylic acid or anhydride thereof. This resinous composition can be made by melt extrusion to form a molded article which is superior in impact resistance as compared to that formed from the component (A) alone. The resinous composition can also be applied in an inner layer or interlayer of a laminated container. This container is suitable for making bottles for food and agricultural chemicals because of its outstanding impact resistance, organic solvent resistance, and oxygen barrier properties.

Disclosed herein is a fuel tank of multi-layer construction having good impact resistance as well as good barrier properties for gasoline, especially one containing methanol and MTBE. The fuel tank comprises (a) inner and outer layers of high-density polyethylene, (b) intermediate layers of adhesive resin, and (c) a core layer of ethylene-vinylalcohol copolymer, with said core layer (c) being shifted to the inside. For better performance, the layer (c) has a thickness which satisfies the formula below. 0.005 ≦A/B ≦0.13
where A is the thickness of the layer (c), and B is the thickness of all the layers. The fuel tank is suitable especially for oxygen-containing gasoline.

A multilayered container comprising an intermediate layer of a resin composition (A) which comprises 50-95% by weight of a specific EVOH, and 50-5% by weight of an inorganic filler, and inner and outer layers of a moisture resistant thermoplastic resin (B), at least the body wall part of the container comprising multiplicity of regions in which substantially 2-dimensional thin layers of the inorganic filler extend parallel with the wall surface and laminated with each other, said layer of said resin composition (A) having a specific moisture permeability. The multilayered container can readily be prepared by thermoforming from the corresponding multilayered structure. Food packages obtained by filling the multilayered container of the present invention with food, sealing it and then sterilizing the package under a condition where heat and moisture act at the same time as in retorting are resistant against impermeation of oxygen that would deteriorate the food contained therein, thus exhibiting excellent storage capability, and have good container appearance.

These multilayered structures have excellent gas barrier properties and resistance to intralayer delamination, and the resin composition layer thereof has neat appearance.

There is described a laminate having good gas barrier properties which comprises at least one barrier layer of a modified ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer containing 0.1 to 5 mol% of pyrrolidone ring-containing units and 20 to 55 mol% of ethylene units, with a degree of saponification of the vinyl acetate component being at least 98 mol%, and at least one layer of a thermoplastic resin. This laminate is superior in drawability, and it can be made by drawing into bottles, cups, and the like which are good in clarity, appearance, and gas barrier properties.
