The extracellular matrix material and the liquid are formed into a mass. The liquid is subsequently driven off so as to form interstices in the mass. Porous implantable scaffolds fabricated by such a method are also disclosed.

A surgical retraction device (170) is also described for retracting a body structure with a curved external surface (171) within a body cavity which comprises a rigid shaft (172) with proximal and distal ends, a contact surface (171) near the distal end with a curvature to conform to the external surface of the body structure and a textured porous material (174) attached to the contact surface for frictionally engaging the structure. The distal portion of the shaft, including the contact surface and the porous material, is dimensioned such that it may be introduced into a body cavity through an opening with a maximum diameter of about 12 mm.

A third member of the distal end effector is configured to engage stomach tissue. The third member is movable in a distal direction relative to the first and second members. A tissue securement member of the apparatus is coupled to at least one of the first and second members for securing together tissue engaged thereby. The tissue securement member includes first and second parts, a suture attached to the first part, and a securing element attached to the suture and configured for engagement with the second part when the first and second members move relatively toward one another to engage tissue, to thereby secure the second part to the first part.

This invention is a method and apparatus for placing a knot such as a laparoscopy knot. Knot material (50) containing a knot is wound around a ferrule (20) surrouding a cylinder (10). A second ferrule (40) surrounds the first ferrule so that the edge of the second ferrule abuts and attaches to the end windings of the knot material. Sliding the second ferrule pushes the windings of knot material including the knot off of the first ferrule and free of the cylinder. The cylinder, ferrules, and knot material containing the knot may be assembled as one disposable unit.
