An apparatus and a method for making a biodegradable material are disclosed. The apparatus comprises an extruder for forming a foamed starch rod and a heated die 6 for modifying the rod. The rod is fed through the heated die by feeding rollers 4. A bonding agent application station 10 is located downstream of the heated die and upstream of a packing unit 12. The method comprises forming a foamed starch rod by extrusion and passing the rod through a heated die. The rods may be formed into sheets or blocks by cutting, the application of bonding agent and adhering the cut rods together.

The devices are configured and arranged to produce three or more product streams from a plastic-rich mixture. One of the product streams is a coarse, heavy stream, one stream is a ground plastic-rich product stream, and one stream is a light material stream. The system can be transported to a waste goods location, operated to separate waste goods, and relocated to a new location.

A microcellular injection blow molding system and method, and microcellular blow molded articles produced thereby, are described. The system is equipped to extrude microcellular material that changes in thickness, material density, or both in the machine direction while maintaining a constant pressure drop rate during nucleation just prior to extrusion, providing the ability to produce consistent uniform microcellular material independent of material thickness. The systems and methods are particularly useful in production of strong, thin-walled, non-liquid-permeable, opaque containers that do not contain reinforcing agent, chromophore, or residue of chemical blowing agent or chemical blowing agent by-product. Semi-crystalline microcellular foams that include a midlevel amount of nucleating agent, and methods of their production, also are provided. The microcellular foams can be produced in typical polymer processing techniques such as extrusion, injection molding and blow molding. The foams exhibit excellent mechanical properties and can be formed over a broad range of density into a number of different foam articles. Also provided are high-density polyethylene foams and dies that are suited for use with HDPE, foams.

The invention relates to a single screw extruder having a means for the introduction of additives and to a method of introducing additives into a silicone rubber composition in the aforementioned extruder. A single screw extruder (1) comprising an elongate barrel (100) having an inlet (7) for introducing a polymer into the extruder and an outlet (5) for discharging extruded polymer from the barrel (100), a rotatable screw (6) axially disposed within the barrel (100) for advancing polymer in the extruder from the inlet (7) to the outlet (5), one or more additive introduction means (2) for introducing one or more additives at one or more predefined positions along the barrel (100) of the single screw extruder (1) between the inlet (7) and the outlet (5). Immediately upstream of the or each additive introduction means (2) there is provided, on or around the screw (6), a plug (12) having a plurality of apertures (20, 20a) which is adapted such that, in use, the only way for polymer or polymer/additive mixture to move downstream of the plug (12) is by passing through the apertures and that, having passed through an aperture, the polymer or polymer/additive mixture is subjected to a reduction in pressure and is simultaneously mixed with an additive from the one or more additive introduction means (2), prior to transportation of the resulting polymer additive mixture to the outlet (5). The extruder is typically used for the addition of additives such as cross-linkers and/or coloured pigments into high consistency silicone rubbers.
