An apparatus is provided for concentrating a solute sample which can be subsequently released for analysis by capillary electrophoresis. The apparatus comprises a tube containing a short length of packed particles or gel (18) adapted to retain sample solutes which particles are retained in the tube by tube constrictions (14,20) or porous plugs (28,30). The tube includes an inlet (24) for introducing a sample into the tube and an outlet (16) for introducing the retained sample into a capillary electrophoresis tube (12).

Long-chain nucleic acids are separated from other substances from solutions containing nucleic acids and other materials, and more particularly nucleic acid/protein mixtures from biotechnical preparations from bacteria, viruses, animal and vegetable tissues and cells as well as body liquids, more particularly cell ingredients and/or degradation products thereof as well as components of body liquids which components are not long-chain nucleic acids, by that the long-chain nucleic acids in the nucleic acid-containing solutions, or after disintegration under mild conditions of the tissue cells and/or cells from body liquids are fixed on a porous matrix, whereas the substances to be separated therefrom are washed out from the matrix, and the fixed nucleic acids, if desired, are subsequently removed from the matrix. A device for carrying out the method preferably consists of a cartridge (1) containing the porous matrix (11) and having at least one inlet opening (3) and at least one outlet opening (4).

An adsorptive trap for monitoring gases and/or vapours comprises a tube (1, 10, 11) (e.g. length about 4-8 cm, internal diameter about 3-5 mm) packed with one or more suitable adsorbents (3,12,18,19) in appropriate amount (e.g. about 0.5 g), each adsorbent being held packed in place between a pair of rigidly fixed porous discs (4,13,20) e.g. porous sintered powder or metal gauze or mesh discs. It has been found that these adsorptive traps provide improved accuracy and precision of measurement as compared with prior art traps in which the adsorbent is relatively loosely packed and retained in the tube. A preferred method of fabricating the traps makes use of thermal contraction and expansion by allowing a previously cooled, contracted, oversize disc to be loosely fitted within the tube and expand on warming to ambient temperature and thereby become rigidly fixed in place.

La micro-colonne (12) et le tube de centrifugation (42) sont dimensionnes de telle maniere que, par centrifugation du volume predetermine de l'eluant au travers de la micro-colonne, un niveau (46) de l'eluant restant dans la micro colonne (12) et un niveau (44) de l'eluant dans le tube centrifugation (42) coincident sensiblement avec ou au-dessus de la surface superieure (18) de la garniture (16) de materiau absorbant. En consequence, la centrifugation de l'ensemble de la micro-colonne (12) et du tube de centrifugation (42) provoque le passage d'un volume predetermine d'eluant au travers de la micro-colonne (12). La determination ou analyse de la substance desiree eluee de maniere selective peut etre effectuee par des procedes de spectrophotometrie. A fluid analyzer having a concentrator and separator for concentrating and separating fluid samples at pressures up to about 10,000 psi (~700 bar). The concentrator and separator may consist of a solid-state thin-film heater-adsorber and a channel supported by a solid substrate. The concentrator may have numerous heated interactive elements for adsorbing and desorbing constituents of a sample fluid. The interactive elements may be heated in a time phased sequential manner by heaters. The separator may separate the sample fluid by compound. There may be thermal conductivity detectors, a flow sensor and electrical conductivity detectors proximate to the channels. This system of concentrator, separator, heaters and sensor may provide information about the sample fluid composition. A pump may be connected to the channel to move the sample fluid through it.

The mass spectrometry method is a mass spectrometry method for an organic acid by a liquid chromatograph-mass spectrometer, wherein a column packed with a hydrophilic polymer having an anion-exchange group is used, and as a mobile phase, a water-soluble organic solvent-water mixed solution is used. The analytical column is a column for liquid chromatography for an organic acid, in which a polyether ether ketone (PEEK) resin housing for liquid chromatography is packed with a hydrophilic polymer having an anion-exchange group.
